Golf clubs is a great idea for patterns. And that golf bag looks really good.

Alan

eelamb
01-20-2012, 02:40 PM
Thanks Alan. As for the golf clubs, the shaft would be the problem with them being narrow, and getting a good carve. But go ahead and make some patterns, Crossed clubs, singles would make good patterns if the shaft diameter size is made larger.

Eddie,

Thanks for posting the pics Eddie. Carving the blank bottle at the right setting (not stretching it out) sure makes for a better looking bottle...

eelamb

For those wanting to see the actual bottle image here it is. I believe this is a very good likeness of the bottle. The pattern is on my web site.

Floyd, again thanks for carving this for me, it shows patterns can be made for the rotary jig, and I hope to have more in the near future. These bottles with or without the label would make great beer tap handles.

I had a question about pattern expiration from my site. Here is what it means:

You have one year to download the file up to 15 times. Thus if your computer crashes or you accidentally delete one or all patterns, all you have to do is log in to your account and download them again. Your account will keep track of what you have purchased. After a year all you have to do is tell me and I will send it to you again.

Here is Eddie's Tiki Bar sign carved in red-orange Padauk. I really like using this wood to carve it holds the detail so nice.

It can be a little toxic so be careful. I found this easy to use chart on toxic wood.

I think it looks good Ed... The 6 and 7 need to be flipped 180 and maybe center the numbers a little but I think there is a good market for patterns for clocks faces.

eelamb
04-04-2012, 06:27 PM
PCW you convinced me. I rotated the numbers and lined them up, so here is this pattern, shared, enjoy.
Has a center hole for drilling the clock feature. If someone makes this post images, and if you place a cutout on the back of the board for the clock, the CW can do all the work for you. Pattern is 9.3 x .7 deep. Sorry you will have to click the link to download. File is 1.18M, too large to post here as MPC or PTN.

Link has been removed because of sfsales200, the ebay seller, who steals our patterns to make a profit off our work.

Sorry but I am done making patterns to share!

Originally I had wanted to make the Missouri state seal, even downloaded and eps file. But the vectors were so messed up I could not use it the way it was. I made the Texas state seal, knowing I would return to the Missouri seal. After many hours dealing with the vectors in MOI, I finally had vectors I could ectrude in MOI3d then take into ZB. Here is the images of the pattern that is currently on my web site. Seems any copyright before 1923 is now part of the public domain. Pattern itself only took about 2 hours, vectors took about 4 hours to fix.

Well back to Zb, missed the right bears arm.

Great work, Eddie! I wonder if you'll want to enhance/define the bears a bit, though...they look a little too shallow to show up very well for carving as it is now. Never any end to it, eh? You're doing a wonderful job!

eelamb
05-02-2012, 08:37 PM
Divided such as two section to be carved? If so enlarge the pattern with the part you want on each board then carve two sections, and glue it up. The pattern is 12.8" x .3 inches. There is a good tips and tricks section on making large signs.

eelamb
05-02-2012, 09:32 PM
Michael, here is the first go around. Need to visit it again tomorrow now. The added height of the bears has not changed the over all height, so there is still room. I need to clean up the edges yet for a crisper image. Thanks for the advise.

Eddie I though MO was the "Show-Me-State" I don't see that on there great seal! I have LightWave8 and Aspire, I think ShaderMap is stll the fastest, but not the best. I like Aspire because I can save the Grayscale in a STL format. LightWave is too hard for this old man to remember all the controls, I need to watch the Videos all the time to make a pattern.

I am back, with the revised Missouri State Seal. Hopefully much better and without letters missing :) Pattern will be on my site tomorrow evening, if nothing else is found wrong. That missing letter was also missing in MOI. Thus I had to go back to almost square one to fix it. I know I could have made the letter, then placed in in the proper location in ZB. Yet since I was redoing other areas I just decided to sculpt the few areas again.
Pattern is 12.857 x .516

Sorry for so many post of this same pattern.Ed,
I presume that with so much work on this pattern, you have done a test carve or two as well.
What size, depth, and Height gave you the best results? What is the smallest size that will work well? This pattern example could be a very good example of similar items with embedded text in a pattern, and where the carve will degrade when made too small.

When I first started carving, I had a student bring me a pattern of a school seal that he wanted on a 4 inch board. I was able to show him a 4" carve and a 10" carve of the same pattern (Actual carves). There was no way he would/could accept the 4" results as a gift for his Prof.

Thanks everyone this one was interesting to do to say the least. Some of these tut's really open your eyes in how to accomplish a complicated task so simply. John it is close, somethings I read how he was doing it and knew how to do it so I skipped it and did it another way. Not as good as his but still functional. Now if I can only figure out the tire tread. Thought I had it but nope, still working on that part.

If you look at this post

http://forum.carvewright.com/showthread.php?17355-Architectural-or-Decorative&p=188920#post188920

you will see John built the site (jpaluck), and is offering a place for model makers, to learn from each other, share their models, and video tutorials. I believe it will catch on, and it is a good place to share your models. We all know the FINE work John does in modeling, you will find his models there and as I said keep watching as more and more models are added to the site, by the model makers out there.

Barry, yes you have seen them before. I did not share those and others, because of where the models might end up so my only choice was to offer them for sale. Now there is a place for sharing models and I will be sharing them at cncmodelclub.com. I will continue to have my store so check there for models too.

Earlier today, I came up with a better method of making better boxes in MoI3d, and decided to test the method out. I make this (I know another urn). I will be placing it on my site this week end, removing one that I do not have good images of it. This one will be a complete carve, with front and back patterns, to cut the dado and the angles (or not, still feel it is best for those 2 to be cut outside the CW).

Alan Malmstrom
01-05-2013, 09:22 AM
Hi Eddie

I have often wondered about making a box like that. I see the design you have made has the angles and dado and am wondering how a box like that would be attached together. Like would it be just glue or would you be able to use brackets too? Have you ever tried to carve angles and attach them together? I've never made a box or anything before. Actually I'm planning on making some night stands and have no idea how to put them together. Finishing nails is one thing I was thinking about.

I've also though about the possibility of the wood warping after being carved. I was using my miter saw one time on some pine and when I would get almost through the wood the tension being released from the wood would actually tighten the cut part of the wood enough to stop the saw blade before I got all the way through the wood.

eelamb
01-05-2013, 11:00 AM
Alan, I actually recommend cutting the 45 deg angles and dado on the table saw. But in another post http://forum.carvewright.com/showthread.php?22099-45-degree-miters-for-a-box I made a 45 deg angle for a member. He cut the boards and they fit.
To answer your question, I like to use biscuits for joining the edges, they hold the box firm while gluing. Another method is dowels, and splines. These all work great to hold the pieces as you get them ready.

On this box anyone that buys the box will have to make sure they have the wood attached to a carrier board or they may cut the pieces loose and jam the bit, thus breaking the bit.

I have a couple of unique boxes I have designed on paper, and needed a way to precisely build the box, that is why I came up with a better way to build the box in MoI3d. (not urns this time) I plan to do a video when I have time.

Note: in each of the urns I sell, I have instructions, they may be simple but it is a guide.

Demo of a jewelry box I am designing. This is not the box I will end up making. Close but I have some faults in the design. Columns are not positioned right for carving. I do not want the flutes at the 45 deg cut line. Anyhow it is close and an experiment. My plan is to assemble the box and cut the top loose right above the door. The top will be an upside down carving, meaning the carved area will be down touching the box sides (may end up being a 2 sided carve). The bottom I plan to make it look like stairs going up to the doorway. Not sure about final surface on the sides, I am thinking of a stone look. I will figure that out when I get to that point. All sides will look the same. Again this was done using only moi3d.

Well here is the jewelry box almost finished. Need to do the top yet. I will have indentations of slits on each side of the doorways., and some type of cornice around the top where the top fits on the sides. This will be a simple carve, just a top, bottom, and 4 sides. bottom is 10x9, box itself is 8x6x6.

I am getting closer to finishing it. And hope to carve it maybe weekend.

I have been out all day. A building supply company was auctioning off everything. Thought I could get some good deals on lumber, but all the lumber they had was trim. I did pick up a bundle of 4"x.5" oak trim, 12' in length with 18 pieces in it for $10 (unfinished). But the prize was a new upright compressor, 7.6cfm, 5hp, 40 gal. I got it for $170. It runs very quiet and weighs a ton. It is still in the truck wrapped. Ice storm hit as I was about to leave, and the roads/truck everything is covered. Figured best to wait till daylight to try and get it unloaded. Tractor will used to unload it. Right now we have about .5" of ice out there, and it is still coming down, but temp is hovering right at 32 deg. so may not be much more than what it is right now.

First is for that man cave, your own guardian angel to watch over you while in the man cave (some of you need this one LOL)
Next is a series of pattern offering where one is the chair seat and back leg, next is the back leg by itself, and last is the seat by itself. Have you ever wanted to make a custom chair but making that seat put you off on making the chair. Well now using the CW you can carve the seat using two patterns (left and right), then gluing them together. Then make the rest of the chair to your fancy, either plain or a Windsor type.
