Hi all, I'm working on a couple of commissions (hence the reason I'm so busy right now along with work) and one of them is a cigar box that the customer wanted a picture of this on.

It took some doing... (OK, a couple of hours of doing) but after much gnashing of teeth (and a couple of test carves to dial in the depth) I came up with this. The carve is in mesquite with black stain put in the carve then wiped and sanded off.

I'm sorry, but no MPC sharing on this one- I told him that I wouldn't share the actual carve work with anyone but he said I could share pictures as long as I put on a watermark. I'll be sure to post the actual pics of the humidor when it is done; this piece is just a proof of concept to show him so that he can approve the work.

On a side note, I was having trouble with the Carvewright measuring the board-- I had some trouble the last time I carved mesquite too but with lots of white tape I was able to get it to measure... this time it wouldn't do it at all. Finally, I used a mirror and saw that the sensor window was covered in a small layer of dust. A good blowing out/vacuuming took care of it and it worked like a charm. The search function on this forum and all of your great advice on here in the past helped me troubleshoot and fix the problem quickly.

Thanks for looking, and any and all critiques/advice/etc is always welcome. This will be my first humidor.

Lawrence, a Beautiful Piece . Your client should be very pleased. Capt Barry - I always thought that a chief had no strips, learn something everyday.

thanks guys-- this one has had me pulling my hair out.

The depth of cut that I finally settled on (this was my third carve... the board was significantly thicker the first time I carved it) is .08

B.sumner- yup... 8 stripes on a Chief Master Sergeant chevron. When I first joined the AF it was 6 down and 2 up, but in '94 they moved it to 5 down and 2 up so that the lowest senior NCO rank would get a rocker (my rank, Master Sergeant)
