I have about 80 hrs on my carvewright. I have been using the 1/8" carving bit only. The bit adapter is slightly loose in the chuck. not the bit inside the adapter. I took out the bit and there are dimple marks from the ball bearings of the chuck on the adapter. I had to buy the chuck and bit with adapter. Should that happen with only 80 hrs on the machine?

Remember that the CT requires new Carving and Cutting bits (with pressed on sleeves). You will also want at least one split collet to use with your other 1/4 inch shank bits as well as the probe. The change will help you avoid lots of problems created by the QC arrangement.

I'm with Bud on this one. We had fewer than 80 hrs on ours when the QC started dimpling the adapters. My understanding is that it is generally caused by user error but I tend to believe with the high number of dimpling problems would lead me to believe that it is more a design issue than a user problem. Anyway we updated to the CT and just for the noise reduction alone it was worth the money.

A bonus for us was the quality of the carves went way up as well.

Good luck with you machine.

yep i agree. it is SO worth the $$ and piece of mind to change out to the CT.

That's really going to pay back many times. Good investment. Capt Barry

Yep, may even have lasted longer than normal. Mine did not even last 50 hours, then got the Rock. Going ever since.

Thanks for the tips. I see that the upgrade isnt cheap. I just got the machine a few months ago it was reconditioned so I think I'll try another chuck and see how it goes. I was told it was user error also but I have to agree with jaroot. Too many user errors. I think it's a design problem other wise why did they come up with a whole different chuck assembly. I think there is too much pressure on the chuck and the engineering is wrong for that type of assembly.

Check into the Rock Chuck before you purchase another Quick Chuck. It will also eliminate much of the vibration and all of the load/unload problems. I'm not sure of the price but I think it is comparable to a replacement Quick Chuck.

Rock and CT are about the same price.

If you do go with just a QC, you need to replace bits that have bb marks on the adaptors or you will wear down your new QC.

My CW B QC also started to wobble around 80 hours. I used the Rock Chuck until the CarveTight came out and re-upgraded to it. Either RC or CT are good investments.

What is a Rock chuck? Is that the same as the upgraded carvetight spindle assembly?

It is not the same, but they do share a few similarities. Each offers there own set of unique advantages/disadvantages. The rock chuck was developed and sold by one of our forum members, the CT chuck was developed and sold by LHR. You can find more info about the rock chuck here: http://www.cw-parts.com/page2.html

I looked at the webpage dbfletcher gave me. Can you explain the difference between them as far as installation. It looks like the Carvewright upgrade is the entire z truck assembly. The rock chuck is what? Just a new type of assembly that goes up into the old z truck?

Here's the video to the CarveTight Installation. I like the way Joe did the intro...turn your volume up!

I watched both videos. I noticed on the Rock chuck video it looks like a different cutting bit is being used. It looks like a regular router bit?
