If I did not see it in the Video Link I would not believe it.... Drilling a Square hole...

So I see this as a possible next big thing for the CW.... Looks like a little gear box or side motion box goes between the chuck and special bit and square guide... Interesting... The 3rd video gives you a better idea on how it works...

Yep--

Remember my video a while back about the rouleaux triangle? That's the shape that will drill a square (It's actually "close" to square)

go to 1:56 to see it in action

Al, awesome videos, I hadn't seen the last two... the lathe one is AWESOME and I could see it working on the CW

I do not see how this could work on the Carvewright. The wobble has to match the rpm. Besides, the Carvewright already cuts square (or any shape) holes!

Honestly... I really don't see it working on the CW either... Too FAST... But it sure is an amazing concept.....

it's a use for all the old "A" model machines with wobbly chucks ;)

Remember the vibration and problems caused by the CQ? Oh, what that thing would do to a carvewright! Besides already have a morterser for square holes.

I was thinking the same thing earlier this morning but didn't want to say so.
:)

That is pretty cool though.

Back when i was in the navy, some one told me about drilling a square hole, I was a fresh new recruit machinist onboard a repair ship, and i figured he was just trying to pull one over on me. Bet him $20 it couldnt be done, he went to tool crib and got the attatchments and set it up on a mill, and i lost my $20. so yes you can drill a square hole.

Kinda brought back memories when I was on my way to boot camp.... they said we were all going to get a shot with a square needle in the left............ never mind. Still scared the crap out me all the way to the clinic. So square hole, square needle.... it's all bad juju to me....

Jerry B, would that have been the Navy Boot Camp, cuz that sure does sound like what was told to us back in the late 60's when we were going for our shots at Great Lakes.

Actually it was Army... on my way to Ft. Lewis, WA (1970). I think the word must have gotten out and ALL the branches were using this scare tactic.. and it worked too! ha ha
