View Full Version : New Information about the CarveTight Spindle

LHR continues to improve our products, making something that is already great...even better.

We already know the CarveTight Spindle is a great improvement over the old-style Quick Chuck, but now, by accident first, and then with further experimentation, we have discovered how to make the CarveTight Spindle have EVEN LESS VIBRATION, which also means EVEN LESS NOISE!!!

All CarveTight Spindles shipped from LHR Technologies, whether sold by themselves, as part of the CarveTight Service Upgrade package or sold in New Version C Machines will now have a slightly longer screw to hold the bit in place and two washers on them. Any machines that may have already been shipped to a distributor will not have these.

NOW THE REALLY GOOD NEWS FOR ALL OF YOU THAT ALREADY HAVE A CARVETIGHT:
You can go to your local box store and make these changes to your CarveTight yourself! All you need to upgrade your CarveTight is the following:

M5x20 Socket Head Cap Screw --- qty 1
#10 Split washer --- qty 2

Place the two washers on the longer screw. Remove the existing screw using the t-allen wrench and put the new screw with washers on your spindle.

Now, how does that sound?!

Well thanks Connie! I'll give it a try. I don't even really notice mine since I changed to the CT, Now the DC annoys me, but every little bit helps and less vibration should mean more reliability.

One Question for clarification:

Split washers? As in Lock washer?

And we all know the rock chuck's are nearly perfectly balanced. I guess we will have to wat for MT to chime in and explain all the "benifits" over LHR or aftermarket chucks out there.

I's sticking with the rock unless there is some REAL benifit to this new chuck. I'd love to see a third party do a static and dynamic balance test on thest two chucks to see who the real winner is.

I guess it took a while, but it would appear that this question has finally been answered. I'm not bashing anyone or anything... at the time I just wanted some empirical data that would compare all the chuck alternatives. Even now, I'd still love to see some data but I understand the logistics of getting impartial data in a way we could all agree was fair and balanced.

I just tried this modification. The noise reduction is significant. At least 15%

M5x20 $0.70 M5 split washer $0.10 each 2 = $0.20

I went with the M5 washer vs the #10 ... guessing that is ok????

I bought them at Ace Hardware. About $1.00. They also had the M5 split washers instead of the #10 split (lock) washers.

From what I understand, either will work, but metric was about more than twice the cost.

I haven't heard it yet. Just found out about it yesterday.

Hello,

I went to Home Depot for mine. The Socket Screws were $ 0.70 for a pack of two and the #10 split Washers were $ 0.98 for a pack of thirty.

I just did my first carve with this mod yesterday. Significant reduction in both noise and vibration. Heck of a mod for under a buck!

I received my "c" machine this week from Amazon it did not have this upgrade. It does make a difference.

I can confirm the heck out of this!
I just got a chance to put in the new bolt and washers today. Running full piercing cuts on this months POM, without any kind of equipment to monitor sound, I sense at least a 50% reduction in noise.

Kept putting it off but finally did this simple fix and was amazed at how much quieter the machine is and it definitely runs smoother with much less vibration. If you have not done this yet you need to do it now.

I did the upgrade and now my machine is no louder than my dust collector, the out-feed rollers don't continually turn, and the nob only turns instead of spinning; BUT, the bits don't slip in and out of the CT as easily as they did. I takes some tugging. I think the split collet might be a challenge to get out. I put the new screw in with no bit in, then a bit would not go in. I removed thew screw and installed a bit, then installed the screw.

The split collet does sometimes stick, usually I open the hex screw a little more and it drops.

Usually all I have to do is move my hand away and the collet will conveniently fall in between the two belts making it harder to retrieve. :cool:

I have a better one than that, Because of my dust collector I sometimes change the bit with the truck near the keypad side. One time with the truck a little to far to the side and the bit fell into the crevice between side panel and belt assembly. Could not find my magnetic pick up tool so had a hell of a time fishing it out. (can you say hell on this forum? ) LOL.

The Rock chuck comes in 2 styles, 1/4" or 1/2" and the CarveTight is 1/2". The rock also sits lower in the machine as it is added to the existing Z truck.

By sitting lower in the z-truck it can cause issues or not work with some of the newer features. The CarveTight is by LHR Technologies, the makers of CarveWright. The Rock Chuck is from a third party vendor.

I bet they are not. CT is metric and I bet the Rock is not. But you should know if you have one of each. You tell us!

this should keep my "a" machine running while I figure out my "c" machine problem.....it's carving but ridiculously loud. it's either z truck, flex shaft, or motor. need to diagnose after the holiday projects....
