Been turning a bunch of bowls on my lathe, decided to try to carve one of them.
46000
I turned it leaving a 2" wide band about 1/8" thicker than the rest of the bowl, drew/traced some grape and leaves on it and started to lower it using my mini-router, interesting to say the least on a curved surface.
46001
Roughed out, bunch of sanding and some carving with my rotaries.
Here it is finished, well as good as it got finished anyway. The bowl is 6¼" in diameter and 3" tall. Took me about 12 hours to carve and sand.

I made the bowl from some chinese elm (may be siberian elm, not really sure) that my neighbor cut down the middle of May. Split the logs in half with my chainsaw, then bandsaw a circle, turn it on the lathe leaving it about 1" thick, soaked in denatured alcohol for 24 hours, wrapped in masking paper, cut the paper on the open bowl side left upside down to dry for about a month, then finish turning. Worked really well, none of the 10 bowls cracked.
What do you think of it?
Thanks ~Mike
