Thank you to Michael Tyler for our latest Tips & Tricks in the new video format.

ISSUE 35 Jan 2011 – Pocket Cutting Tips - Part 1 (http://www.carvewright.com/2010CWweb/learn/videotips/jan11tips.php)

Here is some information about this video & tips on viewing it:

1) It may take some time downloading depending upon your internet connection

2) There is a play/pause button on the bottom left side.

3) It covers four types of Pocket Cutting techniques in this "Part 1". The video is about 22 minutes long, so an 'average' of 5 minutes per pocket type. (The file size is under 70MB)

4) There is a Table of Contents, which appears at the left of the video. The user can click and go directly to a certain selection or view the whole video

5) A Closed Captioning option (click the CC in the control bar) is available for hearing impaired and for those times when words may have been slurred.

Any ideas as to why when I open the Tips&Tricks I only get a thumbnail type picture running in the left verticle black bar on the page. The sound is fine but the picture is to small to see what is being talked about.
If I move the cursor around it never turns into a hand to click to enlarge and rt click is no help either.

Thank you very much, everyone (except 'Lynn' who said I slur my words <grin>).

Very glad that you are enjoying the new format! Joe L. and I have been "talking" about this off and on for over 3 (4?) years (sometime soon after I produced the Scanning Probe video), and finally - we took the plunge. I was waiting to hear some feedback on this first issue before moving along - so, I guess I can proceed and finish up the rest of 'em! (eleven topics are on the list thus far). AskBud was a GREAT inspiration to go ahead with this format too - he basically tested the waters and then some! Thanks, Bud!

One rather ambitious task I have on the agenda is to do a complete overview of the Designer interface, covering 'every' dot-and-tittle. I know for sure it will be a series in several parts/sections - don't know how many yet (3 or 4 parts, I'm guessing). So that's one that will hopefully help beginners, as well as experienced users, alike.

Thanks again! Oh, I decided to add the Closed Captions because, yes - I DO sometimes slur my words! (was just ribbin' ya, Connie!)

I'm wondering if anyone besides jiml and myself is having troubles seeing the current Tips and Tricks video? When using the flyer web-address and/or going directly to the CarveWright website all I get is a screen with a black vertical bar with "Pocket Cutting Tips - Part 1" in the center of the bar.....then nothing. The screen says it is through loading. Even after waiting several minutes the video is not forthcoming.

Lawrence... just went to the CarveWright site and came up with the same black vertical bar. All the writing is to small to read but by clicking blindly I did get it to play the video....in a 1-1/2 by 2 inch square. Guess I'll have to get out my magnifing glasses to see what Michael is talking about. Oh well, I like listening to Michael anyway.

I vote for some kind of downloadable also as I don't always have internet available when I've got time to study the tips and tricks.

Hey, Jerry - It's a new feature! <smile>

Hello Everyone,

A couple folks have mentioned they cannot view the tutorial properly. Not sure why, but I would suggest making sure you have the most recent version of Flash installed on your computer. Normally, you can right-click anywhere on the movie area and a pop-up will display and have a menu choice something like "Get Adobe Flash Player 10.xxxx". If you click on it, you will be directed to Adobe's website and be able to download and install the latest version. I've heard that somwhere in the neighborhood of 97% of computers have Flash installed (which is precisely why we chose that format), but it may be important to keep up-to-date with the latest version. Let us know if that "fixes" your viewing problems.

I'll talk to LHR regarding a downloadable version of the tutorial videos. I already know from experience that the WMV file format would be best choice (for viewing quality and reasonable file size) and can easily be played on the vast majority of computers "out there". The downloadable versions will not have the Table of Contents nor the Closed Captions, though, because those features are "Flash-dependent".

I also had the problem with it being small but was able to magnafy it by using the magnifying glass in the lower right corner of my browser window (win7). Sure would be nice to have it down loadable. But it was great info Michael, thanks

I just rendered a WMV version of the video as a test candidate for a downloadable.

Quality is excellent - both video and audio. The file size is about 86MB at the 960x768 size - not bad for a high-quality 22 minute WMV! I can make the file smaller by reducing the playback size, but waiting for feedback from LHR as to whether or not we actually should make it smaller if we go with downloadable versions in addition to the online-viewing. (As mentioned before...we do lose the Table of Contents and Closed Captioning features.)

This video was awesome! I am very happy to see that the idea I employed without searching (utilizing the 3/8" bit to carve sections out) was actually an existing 'good idea'! It makes me feel proud to know I was actually doing something right, without even knowing it. I DEFINITELY learned how to improve on the technique I was using, however, as I was doing all of my lines manually, without the proper snap function being employed, and I'm definitely going to remedy that in future carves!

Thank you so much for this! I can't wait to do some new designs this weekend. (...with the news that my Ringneck Blues DC is ON THE WAY, I'm chomping at the bit! - no pun intended!)

Hi Jim,

I don't know why it won't work for you, but an alternative would be to download the stand-alone video that Greg posted above and see if that will playback properly for you. (Once we get the WMV file posted at CarveWright, that would work too - it would use Windows Media Player by defualt, I believe).

Also, just out of curiousity, did you also try viewing it at the link Jason (LittleRedWoodshop) posted above?

What browser are you using? I had IE6 and it worked fine. I just upgraded to IE9 and it is about the size of a postage stamp. It is so small I can't tell what the heck is going on. So it looks like it may be a browser issue.

Hi Terry,

I wonder if you are indeed correct regarding it being a browser issue. Have you tried using Firefox or Chrome to see if that works alright? Just curious.

Anyway, I did run across the following when I did a quick search for IE9 video playback problems. I have no idea if this will apply, but perhaps it is related(?).

- - - - - - -
(quote - complete with grammatical errors and misspelling)
The new Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) has got a serious problem. A lot of users are complaining that they can’t play any flash video and game as well as Java applet. Let’s make a couple of example to see and understand the problem and in what situations it is clearly visible. When Internet Explorer 9 (http://www.webtlk.com/2011/02/11/download-official-internet-explorer-9-rc-standalone-installer-now/) users try to open websites or blogs containing Java applets (http://www.webtlk.com/2009/02/27/how-to-remove-and-delete-java-runtime-environment-jre/), the area where the applet should be visible is completely blank . A white background will replace the applet. The applet that is not working is a specific Internet Explorer 9 problem as it doesn’t happen on Internet Explorer 8 which works smoothly. In other cases instead, when Internet Explorer 9 users try to open websites or blogs containing a video or a TV show for example, they won’t get anything. No sound, no image. Nothing at all. They will only get an error message or warning stating that Adobe Flash, Shockwave Player or Silverlight is not detected or installed and that they cannot play any video etc. Of course, Flash, Shockwave, Silverlight and Java are correctly installed on the machine. Let’s see how to fix this issue.

All these problems are due to the fact that Java applets have been blocked and filtered by the new Internet Explorer 9 ActiveX (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/products/ie-9/features/activex-filtering) Filtering feature which ensures safe surfing to its users. Untill Internet Explorer 9 won’t be fully compatible with Java you won’t be able to play any video, sound or music relaying on such technologies. The workaround here is to turn off and disable ActiveX Filtering:
Open Internet Explorer 9
Click the Gear icon located on the right of the browser window.
Click Safety from the menu. It is located under the Zoom option.
Untick the ActiveX Filtering option.
If instead you wish to turn off the ActiveX Filtering for a specific website, go to the website you wish to see video, music or Java content of.
Hover over the “No Through Traffic” icon located at the right end o the address bar with your mouse. This will trigger a special dialog-box stating that “Some Content is Filtered on This Site”. Click the Turn off ActiveX Filtering button.
(unquote)
Here's the direct link to the post that I quoted above: http://www.webtlk.com/2011/02/16/fix-internet-explorer-9-ie9-cant-play-game-flash-video-and-java-applet/

I'm using IE9 now and even before I "moved up" I couldn't see Buds videos but the sound was fine, just a black screen. I'll try the link that Michael gave and see if that works for both.

Hi Jim,

I've posted both the online view and the WMV files on the CarveBuddy website (WMV will play on Windows Media Player and other playback software).

- ISSUE 35 Jan 2011
Pocket Cutting Tips Part 1
(online video) (http://www.carvebuddy.com/CW_Tips_JAN_2011_Pocket_Cuts_Part_1.html)
or (download WMV 84MB (http://www.carvebuddy.com/Videos/Jan%202011%20Pocket%20Cuts%20Part%201.wmv))

- ISSUE 36 Feb 2011
Pocket Cutting Tips Part 2
(online video) (http://www.carvebuddy.com/CW_Tips_FEB_2011_Pocket_Cuts_Part_2.html)
or (download WMV 41MB (http://www.carvebuddy.com/Videos/Feb%202011%20Pocket%20Cuts%20Part%202.wmv))

You can right-click on the WMV links and choose "Save Target As..." to save them to your hard drive.

I think there should be a hyper-link on the Carve Wright Corner for the Tips & Tricks with this link http://vimeo.com/groups/carvewright (http://vimeo.com/groups/carvewright) which will help in finding a way to view this video in a larger screen. It took me a while to find this link by clicking on the button "See tips for VIEWING VIDEO FORMAT HERE." Would have been nicer just to have a direct link instead of having to read the past forum and finding the link to the Vimeo page. Just my 2 ¢ worth. Nice Video to watch,
