Here is my attempt at it. ( the png file turned into a jpg when I uploaded it so it really is not representative of the file I used.)

Here is another option for you. I did this in photoshop making each object different heights in a hieghtmap and blurring etc.

Alan nice work on the pattern, had not thought of raising the outline (inside the circle) and the inside to make it more of a 3d. I did make the entire inside a true 3d with fur and such, but was not satisfied with the outcome so I tossed it out.

Ya, putting fir on and such would be quite a bit of work.

I agree, here is the image of the one I had done, as I said I did not like the outcome, so deleted it.

Not like me to quit on something so started over, and here is my results. The fur could still be better, but heights are better.

Nice work! I think it would work to etch the fur into the wood with a wire wheel after the carve. In any case I feel that perhaps the only way to finish a piece like this would be to use various shades and colors of stain (or paint) on the different elements of the design.

Alan great idea on the wire brush, now see I have to throw this one away too. LOL
Speaking of paint, have you ever used chalk (brush on with a stiff bristle brush) for shades, it works great. Just paint as normal use the chalk to shade areas or add the dirt look, then clear coat.

Don't throw it out just work with it after carving.
On second thought it would probably work better to add fur on wood using a carving chisel set. Wire brush would probably just coarsely abrade the surface. Sanding wouldn't be necessary after chiseling.
Did you use Photoshop on that Eddie?

No I use Silo, Moi, and sculptris, in modeling. I used Moi mostly, even though after I changed the colors while working with it, I noticed it could be imported into designer directly, so all I actually did was to make a mess of the fur. LOL
The file was a PNG before upload here with invisible background, worked much better for importing using png format.
Forgot I use paintshop pro 6 for editing most my images. I do have PS cs5 but hardly use it and it is on my laptop not office pc.
