Another tutorial question, this one project 3 (piercing)

In project 3 tutorial it has you use a board of thickness .75 and you set depth of .78 for the cuts so you go all the way through. Does this mean that you need to tape a thin piece of plywood to the back or something? The tutorial mentions nothing about how this works when the piece is actually being cut. Sorry if this will be obvious once I get the machine out of the box. It came today and I can't lift it out of the box by myself as I recently had hernia surgery. It might be good though as I might not have the patience to go through all the tutorials otherwise.

I think that this is a common concern for newer users who are not familiar with the insides of the machine.
Where the bit operates, there is nothing under the board, it is between the two X-drive mechanisms.
