Just take your shop, cut it in half, double the stuff in it, cover the floor (and everything else) with sawdust, unpaint the walls and you've got my shop! <- insert smiley

Thanks Jaroot, sounds like you have a small shop like mine. Just wondering if anyone has new Ideas to maximize space, anything new you've come up with?

Not really. I just try and have everything on a mobile base of some kind and try to push them out of the way when not in use. I have built a tall mobile unit that holds my planer and has shelves above and below to hold other bench top type tools. I mounted paint can holders on one side of it. I've posted pics of it in my album. I'm not very organized by nature so the shop is kind of a disaster area. About once or twice a year I really get after it but it soon clutters up again. Everybody, myself included, figures that if something doesn't have a place, put it in the garage.

I lied. It isn't in my album. Try this link: http://forum.carvewright.com/showthread.php?15773-Can-Rack

I was working today on one of the Goofy projects that I get into (3ft section of Carved Wooden Rail Road Track)
of course with a yesterdays Deadline!! --anyway you can see south end of the shop in one of the photos.
The life size rails are made up of 7 carved pieces of poplar, now glued up and primed, ready for the faux rusted steel finish,
I've got the Red Oak ties cut-out and torch/charred, I'll use a high speed wire wheel to make the wood grain stand out for the staining.
I had the actual steel Rails in the shop, but artist said the 90lb per rail was just to heavy to deal with,
so she decided on going with the Poplar a little less than 10lb per rail

Ps. It's all going to be used as part of a Dispaly, for a Sphere of Ceramic Art -- balancing between the Rails

My shop is in the basement and all my machines are on wheels except my lathe which I very seldom use. I have a section tarped off to help keep the dust contained to one area and my carving room is an old fruit cellar under my front porch, and I use this to keep the noise down low. Other than that I have 2 benches with storage under them and a roll-a-way tool box. My work area is maybe 12X12. Pictures wouldn't do it any justice.....believe me.

That ain't right Ken. That just ain't right. Where are the piles of sawdust? How about the stack of tools that need to be put away? I'd put up a picture of my shop but the firemarshal would track me down and lock me up.

Here's Photo of the down sized Faux Finished R/R Ties to go along with the Rails I did yesterday.

Terry, -- This is also a shot of the Crating Shop -- next to my Prep Shop
to each as own I guess -- I at least, like to see the Bench I'm Working On!

Ps. There's actually more than 3 benchs under all that!

Sure Do Terry, along with Fine Art, Antiques, Antiquities, and even some up to date Contemporary Pieces.
I have to wear several different "Hats" every day around here, -- something different to work on nearly every day.
Here's a few --- now multiply those by about a dozen every month. --- Helps Keep me from getting bored with work.

Isn't amazing how much cleaner a work/business shop is compared to home shops? My shop at work stays clean (partly because of OSHA, Enviromental Services, and Safety agencies), but that's a good thing because it keeps my workers safe. My shop at home is nowhere near as clean.

Ken:

Did I get that right? You have slice after slice after slice glued together?

(By the way, I want to see a picture of the broken ear after you fixed it!)

Kenm810
06-24-2011, 08:24 PM
Actually if you look close at the small cut away photo in post #7
you can see that the base was a Glued up 1 1/2" x 6" x 37" block carved first, than the up-right as a 3/4", 2 sided dished carving
and finally the top 1 1/2" x 3" x 37" glued up block as a domed and tapered 2 sided carving. Finished Rails are 5.5" x 5.5" x 36"
Have to wait till next week when I'm back at the Shop to fine a photo of the repaired Ear.

Kind of a slow day today, So -- I was thinking...

While we were talking about shops and how messy they can get, with piles of dust and chips accumulating on the floor around our machines and benches. I thought it would be helpful to have a small robotic cleaning unit zipping around the shop to clean up at least the floor after co-workers have forgotten to sweep or vacuum up after themselves. You know something like that flat kind of round vacuum for the home you see advertised on TV all the time. --- Well, I’m not to knowledgeable about Robotics or combining them with Vacuums, so I came up with an alternative --- Something you’d expect to fine hard at work in the TV show Warehouse 13. If you make a mess -- it chases you around the shop and repeatedly whacks you in the shins, to remind folks to clean up after themselves. I see the device as a cleaning incentive, -- by not having to limp out of the shop at the end of the day.

and we'll see if we can get there by Thursday to look it over.

Hello everybody, My name is Joe Ragsdale from Tampa, Florida, please allow me to introduce myself. I'm new to the form but not new to the carvewright family. My Dad introduced me to carvewright about a year ago and I fell in love with the carvewright system. Anyway I've completed my Start U packet and hoping to become the first Start U member in Florida. You can visit me on my website www.customcarvingonline.com (http://www.customcarvingonline.com) (still under develpoment) or look for me on Facebook.

With regards,

Welcome to the CW Forum, Joe.

I've talked to Joe quite a bit over the last couple of months. He does a fantastic technique with imported images that he carves in wood. Can't wait to find out what he does to them in PhotoShop (I believe?!) to make them look good in wood. Plus, hear more about his staining technique that really enhances the image.

You should go see his website.

Really nice Ike, do you use the CW in the trailer? How is the noise both for you and surrounding vendors?

Yes I do use it in the portable trailer and I hand rout my signs. I run my exhaust systems and my A/C. But the shop is enclosed and noise very low. I need to wear ear protection in the shop.
