i curently just have the basic software with centerline and would like to learn how to carve out some 3d art.I am a amatuer photographer/ video, been looking at adobe photoshop extended that would be above my needs for the photo/video needs, though the 3d features if compatible with my carvewright would be worth it. Has anyone looked into this or is running it. thank you for your time on this .

I don't have the latest version of Adobe Photoshop just a previous version and I don't think that the newer one does 3d. It would take some time to get to know the program well enough to make heightmap images to import into Designer but it is possible. If you are going to spend the money you might as well get another program called Aspire: http://www.vectric.com/WebSite/Vectric/aspire/aspire_index.html This program is made to do 3D but still has a learning curve. They have a lot of info and video on the web site to get to know it.

I checked out the Photoshop CS5 Extended and it does have a 3D extruding and edititng functions. But that will not do any good for creating images for the Carvewright Designer program. you see the images useful for the designer program are heightmaps which means the darker pixels of a 2d raster image are interpreted as high and the white pixels are low. And anything inbetween is assigned various differing heights. A good raster hieghtmap image will actually look like an ex-ray of bones or brain.

The kind of photoshop filters that work well for creating hieghtmaps are "inner shaddow" used on layers of pixels and the blur filter comes in handy for making a hard edge smooth. After blurring you will notice on a raster image the edge will have a gradual gradation from light to dark which when interpreted as a heightmap will be a rounded edge instead of a sharp drop off. Use of the selection capabilities and layers gives good control of creating heightmaps in photoshop but it is hard to do unless you know the program well. The use of selections layers and quick masks is needed. The curves filter is also very useful in changing the height of things that are on their own layer or selected.

I have not leaned to use Aspire software by vectric but I shure wish I had the time and money to learn it. Perhaps some day I will.

I bought centerline text also with my carvewright. Thinking It was needed to do text with the carvewright. To be honest with you, I have yet to use centerline text at all. I've used photoshop for everything so far. Height maps are very easy to make, even though some say otherwise. This just isn't the case. With RGB color,- which is Red Green Blue, 0,0,0 is pure black and will be your highest point. 255,255,255 is pure white and will be your lowest point. So you have a total of 256 points of height. Make sure you keep all three the same value. For the most part, thats it! There is a way to convert to a pov-ray or raster and get 65000 points of height, but, we're only dealing with a inch of carving depth here. How much do you really need? So you can practice, search 'silhouette' in google and see what you can come up with! Hope this helped!

I want to thank all who responded. After your responses and further looking, i ended up getting adobe creative suite 5.5 production premium (this included illistrator) . After playing with photo shop and illistrator 3d , i came to realize that it will take some time to learn. So in the near future i will get the DXF importer to complement the adobe software and this fall/winter look at aspire carv pro 6.( thx Alan )...CasinoDuck after seeing the results of your photshop project, it reafirmed my choice. looking foward to becomeing a more active member of the carveing community....h20bear
