Here is a link to a hardness scale that Lawrence posted.
If may help to understand the need to adjust your "Max-Pass-depth" and reason to opt for "Optimal" carve setting with the Raster (carving) bit as well.

Just in case you don't want to click-- sorry I don't remember where I got it but it was from the net somewhere (I have it saved on my desktop) The janka scale is the industry standard for rating hardwood floor hardness. One thing it does not show is that some woods are also more prone to have other "stuff" that can mess with your bits-- abundances of hardspots or knots etc. Also some woods, especially those that grow in sandy areas or have "open" bark (mesquite or teak for example) has a lot of silicates in it that are VERY hard on tools.

If anyone knows how hard corian is on the janka scale I'd love to know--I couldn't find info on it anywhere.

So I take it that the higher the number on the janka scale the harder the wood. Like on the Rockwell scale for hardness of steel the higher the number the harder the steel is and it is also more brittle past a certain point..
