Tonight I finished up a commission for a fellow Air Force member. It is a 12x18 lithophane of an EC-130H superimposed over the Stars and Stripes.

The material is mahogany and the finish is rude and crude. (I still need to put on a coat or two of topcoat)
Internal lighting is 44 LEDs and there are 6 spare inside and if the customer wants it I can easily drill holes through the center level to create lighting for the shadowbox area. (he is away right now so I can't ask him until he returns)
The back is recessed with a french cleat, and the sides are carved with the patches of the Group and its Squadrons.

The top embellishment is friction fit in place and allows for access to both the litho and replacement of the glass if necessary.

Of course the picture with the most accurate lighting was taken without me taking into account the reflection... Murphy (Sod) strikes again

Lawrence, that's one of the nicest (and largest) lithophanes I've seen! The backlighting appears to be just right and shows off the litho at it's best. Excellent work!!

I give a second vote to what Michael had to say about your lithophane.

Wow Lawrence! That is an extremely nice piece!

I did just have a thought on the lithos. Some of them can be quite brittle, depending on the depth of cut. Just a suggestion, wouldn't it be to your advantage if you put a piece of glass over the cut litho, to protect it from fingers and prodding? Sure, it would be a little more work to get the box set up to handle the glass, but it would protect your piece. And as long as you have a nice, clear piece of glass, it shouldn't mess with the viewing quality of the image.

Lawrence,

Really Great Looking Litho, and light box Display!!

Ps. -- Alex,

Thinking along the same lines of protecting the Litho's,
I've used cut to size sheets of 1/16" or 1/8"UV stabilized clear Lexan to
shield the fronts of a few of my Litho's from Harms Way, plus it's a big help keeping dust form
collecting on their surfaces. You can get it at most Hardware or Builder Supply Stores

Thanks for the verification Ken. I kinda figured that this would be possible, but wanted more input as well.

Maybe on my next litho, if I get to keep it, I will give that a shot. The one's I have done so far got sent to shows. Some came back, others didn't. The one's that came back still get used today.

Thanks all-- you've got me blushing a bit with your compliments.

This was certainly the largest litho that I've done-- I used the 12x18 corian from LHR and it worked just fine.

I'll have to try the glass front in the future. One of the things that I've discovered about the lithos, though is that folks like to touch the carvings--like they don't believe the picture comes from the single color corian. It's a really good idea though.

Thanks again,
V/r
Lawrence

That is one bad *** piece of craftsmenship if I don't say so myself Lawrence. Nice job, and thanks for showing it off. I agree too that the first thing people want to do is touch it, they always want to know how you got the picture in there...."magic" I tell them.
