There is always a chance of damage.
Before you do anyone's prized possession, go to Goodwill or a ceramic shop and pick up a few pieces to test. Make sure you get ceramic that has been fired (I think it's called bisque). Green ware is too soft.
Most times the probe tip will leave a gray residue, which usually wipes off with a damp cloth. You always have a high chance of taking the paint off so a client should be fully aware.
There are soft tips that you may place on the probe tip, but they will not allow the detail you get with the bare probe.
