Finally decided to try carving the lid of one of the boxes I found at Goodwill. I used a pattern by Just Doodles (Center Box Ornament P3) that worked out great. Some of the rest of the design didn't turn out as visioned but I can/did work around it.
1) The box turned out to be MDF (I believe)and thus didn't have a smooth finish when carved. But it gave the gold paint a hammered look.
2) There was a design already in the lid and so I designed the fonts on either side of it. But when carved it skimmed the top just enough it removed the design....leaving a wide space that I'm going to have to do something with.
So, all in all I'm quite happy with the results.
