A couple of weeks ago I got to meet a pretty amazing guy who has a heck of a metalworking workshop. I mentioned to Kevin (the owner) that I'd love to commission him to make a few forged holdfasts and he said "why don't we just make them now and you can have them for free" Of course I said yes and had a very enjoyable time doing my first forging and hammering and I left with 4 very functional holdfasts....
(here is a link to a video of his workshop-- very fun to watch and he has LOTS of LARGER tools that he has acquired since this video) Most importantly though, I met and made friends with a very cool and standup guy.

(his shop tour really begins at about the halfway point)

Anyway, as a thank you I thought I'd make a sign with his company badge (the badge he puts on the presses he makes) and last night and tonight I knocked this one out of MDF.

It's finished in a similar way to the squadron one I just did--primed and then painted with krylon stone effect paint and then black latex gloss. Tomorrow I'll hit it with some lacquer to lock it all in.

and here's a closeup of the lettering

Thanks for looking- please let me know if these projects get too repetitive and I'll stop posting them-- just thought maybe someone would enjoy the pattern as well (of couse you would change the lettering...

Once again Lawrence,
Very nicely done. He sounds like a fine fellow to know and I'm sure you enjoyed the process. Are the painters tape wrapped projects on the bench the holdfasts or do I see four knife tangs ready for scales and pins?

Great pattern, I think I could use it for police/security patch pattern as well. Thanks. Keep posting, I am looking forward to trying the stone paint on something.

Lawrence, thanks for posting that link to Potters shop. He has a lot of old machines but they all look to be in excellent condition. I've run everything he has there and it's good to see he's keeping things going using the old manual machines.

Thanks all-- I really appreciate the support. This was actually a really interesting project to design--despite the at-first-glance simple shape. I've posted a video in the techniques section explaining why.

Capt, Those are indeed knife tangs- I'm making scales out of mesquite/turquoise and (hopefully) giving this set of steak knives to the better half for her Birthday (along with four pennies for her to give back in return) I usually have 3 or 4 projects going on at any given time and this is one of them (along with an infill plane I am close to completing and sand burned marquetry inlay doors for an entertainment center)

Thanks again all--lots of fun :)

I'm just hitting the 50-hour mark on my cut motor so I figure it's about time to take the machine apart/blow out the cut motor etc. and give everything a good once-over... wish me luck!
