It's about 22" long...two more legs carving now. The mid-section is 6 pieces sandwiched together from the sliced .stl model I imported. Next, I'll give it a hard coat and start adding some details. I've been wanting to make one of these ever since I got the STL importer...so I'm doing it. This is a "test project" that I'm doing to prepare for the conference. I'll be showing the process from beginning to launch...I mean end. I plan to show a finished model, and various pieces representing all the stages.

Very cool! Ive wanted to make a replica Rocketship XM for a while. This may just inspire me to buy the STL program.

2 more legs completed, so now I can cover it with some epoxy and start adding additional details. I could have probably made an armature and roughed all these shapes by hand...but why? The CarveWright does it quick and perfect. That lets me focus on the really fun stuff!

Geez Doug...

Another great project!

I was talking to Mike Tyler a few months back, around Halloween, about a project that I was thinking of doing.

A candy dish shaped like a flying saucer. Remove the saucer top to access the candy...

Unfortunately, nothing ever happened with that, as I got busy and things happened. I think I may need to revisit that idea.

Outstanding Doug,

Looking forward to seeing it in person down in Houston and seeing your process. So much to learn from those who are pushing the process and techniques out there on the leading edge. Thanks for sharing this with us.

I've been posting things on the blog here, but I don't know if it's actually making it "live". It appears to be moderated and not approved.
At any rate, lots of rocket progress! I have finished all six panels for the pedestal and have sculpted the rocketship. Today I worked on the moon and some exhaust. I think I may be having too much fun...none of which would be possible without my CarveWright.

I'm getting right along.... got some initial paint on today. This is the base coat-so it will look pretty different at the end.

Very nice, love the finishing. What type of paint do you use and do you mix your own colors and clear coat?

Thanks everyone!
I'm actually going to talk about this piece and finishing at the conference. I plan to take it there.
Brandon: I have been using exterior grade acrylics for most of my work. I specifically like the "Modern Masters" metallic color line and use
a product called "NOVA Acrylic" for most of my non-metallic.
I use some of their colors as they are and then hand mix others. I do a lot of glazing and all of that it hand mixed. I try to keep track of
some of the amounts so that I can reproduce them later...especially if I like the color combinations. I do all of my mixing in 1 and 2 oz. containers
to keep it simple and easy to track.
