I know the CW can carve plastic, but I'm wondering if anybody here creates engraved plastic nameplates and if so, where I would look to purchase the plastic? To create something like this:

Thanks in advance!

Hmm. I might have done my own digging! I found Rowmark (http://www.rowmark.com) and Canadian Engravers Supply Co. (http://www.cesco.ca/), each which seem to have what I'm looking for, I believe! (I am still hoping someone might give me a push in the right direction, and be able to provide me with some info on how well our CW machines work with this material!)

Thanks again!

Rick the person you seek is Big Al! (Digitalwoodshop) The Chief is the expert on tags and I think he uses the CW to cut the shape and a laser cutter for the fonts? But maybe he does use the CW to make some font? Anyway he can direct you to what material you need to use!

Thanks Ike,

First is you will need to send the tags through the machine on a carrier board for stability and thickness.

I have not tried engraving plastic in a few years, but the machine would not do very small text well.... Try covering a board with packing tape and see how small your text will work... I even cut a Rotary Engraver Bit in half and tried... NO Luck....

But give it a shot.... There have been so many improvements in Designer it might just work...

My early work with reflective vinyl on PVC Board. Rotary Engraving Bits.

Thanks, Al. Food for thought, for sure. I figure I'll try it out with the 60 degree bit, at a very small depth, and see what happens. Packing tape, you say? In your expertise, would you say I'd get a good example of what to expect from that? (When you say 'packing tape', you're not talking about duct tape, right? You mean plain, brown packing tape?)

Thanks again!

I think Al is refering to "clear" packageing tape used to wrap boxes for shipping. It lets you cut some plastics without melting. Works good for scrollsaw work also.

I have been cutting name plates for my fire dept accountability tags for a while now, I order my plastic through Rowmark and I took a piece of MDF and carved the spaces for the tags to sit in and used masking tape gto hold them in place.
my smallest letters have been 1/4 because you have to get deep enough to get through the coloring surface of the plastic.
I seem to have some good luck with it and it is cheaper on my budget than where I ordered my tags in NJ.

Awesome news. Thanks! I've got a supplier locally who carries Rowmark product. I've sent them a request for more info, and hope they get back to me soon.

As would I!
