Question on Lawrence-McFadden Finish

Done some carves in red oak and plan on painting some of them with Acrylic paint. I plan on using Lawrence-McFadden Natural Oak wipe-on Gel Stain on the oak. My question is should I paint first then put on the Stain, or stain first then paint? Have not used this stuff before. Maybe liquidgutairs has an answer for this or someone who has used the gel stain.

I don't think it matters so long as you remember oil based over water based, ok, water over oil not ok.
