Here is a two sided 3D spoon 3"x 10" made back in june 2007. however two sided project will only center on the "B" side " regardless what you progam it to do on the keypad " so you will need to split it up if you use a sled or call LHR for a fix if any.

Hey LG, got a question for you. On the spoon file the area at each end, the circle, is this for the purpose of a tab? My wife loves her wooden spoons, anyone have any suggestions on the best kind of wood to use for spoons? Thanks

CJ
Jerry hardwoods are best for wooden kitchen utensil, like cherry, walnut, birch, hickory, maple or alder. Never wood such as cedar, redwood or pine and oak. Redwood and cedar is toxic and pine/ softwoods will splinter as well as oak. But I have read birch to be the best and withstand abuse!

If it is going to be decorative then I would say any material you want! Check out this site and see how much money they ask for wooden spoons! http://www.crafty-owl.com/wooden-spoons.htm

I thought that was a kind of high price, but hey they are hand carved and the thing is very few would know the difference if it was carved in the CW! I run into with my signs most folks say they can't tell the difference between my hand routed and the ones made with the CW! By the way sorry for being rude, thank you for sharing and for showing us your great instruments!

for the sled MPC cut a plywood bottom @ 3/4" x 6.5" x 23" run the file on the Carvewright then fill in the outside. Make sure you use the following: stay under rollers? no keep the same? yes then select, place on corner. cut to size? no

I just moved to a new computer this week so all my data is still getting moved over, I will upload! until then try using SpoonR-topR006-a.mpc (http://forum.carvewright.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=42356&d=1298331783) and SpoonR-botR006-a.mpc (http://forum.carvewright.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=42357&d=1298331788) the Design was made with my wife looking over my shoulder so you know it's approved!

For this file you can use the same sled but the carving in-point is very close to the end blocks so use tape to hold it and later I will make a new sled MPC when I get the computer setup.

I think the girls really like them, I had to make a few for my wifes friends at work or i would be up the creek..

cestout those two came out nice. I normally turn my wooden spoons, etc and carve them after wards. I did create some and posted them on my website. Here is a mix and match set someone may want. Each is on my site too.

If you carve this, for the fork and spatula tip section set the height to 50% so it fits into the handle properly and carves lower.

Fork is same front and back.

John nice modeling and render. I see you are still using MOI. I like what I have seen of it, but for some reason it will not run on my win 7 pc. It runs on my office pc, but who wants to stay in the office to model. Silo has features such as zbrush, called paint displacement. Works a lot like scruptris, but too many subdivisions. Just wish text was easier in Silo, then again maybe it is just I and one day I will figure it out too.

Henry1, when you do a cutout in designer it places the tabs automatically. They are not seen but are there. For 2 sided carvings, make the tabs thicker.

For adding tabs as in your MPC. Choose the circle or rectangle. Make either one crossing the cut line, click on carve region on menu bar, then set the dept to 0.0, now copy and paste it to anywhere else on the pattern you want a tab. Do this for the other side too, close the the same location.

Nice job. However, Im not sure if you are aware than many of us just use a keyhole bit successfully with our carvewrights. I'm know you can do it with the Rock Chuck and I'm pretty sure it also works fine with the Carvetight. If you search the forums for keyhole you should find the relevant posts as well as sample mpc's on how to set it up. If you cant located them, let me know and I'll dig the up and post back here.

Good Morning Henry,

Because both sides needed to match each other, I just did a copy/paste of Lawrence's Bowie Knife Mpc,
inverted and centered it for the carving on the back of the project board. The Nutcracker would need a
second Mpc file of the Back or Modification of the Front Pnt or Mpc File to look like a back for the Nutcracker.

sorry it's been a while since I've posted any new models. Here is one I've made for the local carving club. They hand carved 4.5 inch replicas of the different state quarters. They are down to 9-more to go and in their words "some folks have lost interest" and asked if I would be interested in doing any with my CW. I agreed but only if I wasn't taking a project away from someone that wants to do it. Their answer was that a couple of folks would be relieved! At any rate, here is my attempt at Idaho.

the carvings are in maple with cherry gel stain (right) for a test carve, and the final in the basswood they gave me to carve so it would match the others that have been done. I have to say that a piece of dog poo would probably carve more nicely on the CW than basswood does, but I managed on my second attempt (I had to add a LOT of draft as the first carve in basswood was simply one big tearout)

lynchburgbull asked me if I had a beer bottle pattern. I have made a few over time, but lost a lot of my pattern with a hard drive crash. I know I should know better, thing is I got lazy, some time before that when the backup drive got full and needed a larger one. As they say my loss, rest assured they are all backed up now days. :p

Ok here is a beer bottle, in ptn, grayscale in PNG, image from designer, and what I used to make the pattern in MoI3d.

This link is to a hard drive enclosure that Chief sent me. If by chance you have an old computer with the hard drive intact but the rest of it dead, then this can be a back up drive for you.

Thanks Tom and lynchburgbull. I looked closer at the bottle, it is fine, quite large in size 1.6Mb, and decided to make a few changes. One I raised the height so the center of the bottle is at about .028 carve depth, second, reduced the pattern size to more of a normal bottle size, and reduced the overall file size to 122KB. Here is that pattern.

You are welcome Tom. Leo I saw Toms post and had to wait for 18 mo old grandson was here. When they left I did the foam, using ZBrush, pulling the edges out then sculpting. Since the bottle was already made it took about 15 minutes. The bottle itself was made using MoI3d, trace outline on one side, use revolve to make the bottle. Save as STL, bring into blender to create a bass relief, into PS to finish the relief (gray scale), then into designer, adding a little smooth in PE. Took longer to create the 2.5d pattern than it did to create the 3d pattern. Since the stl was 3d, I exported the original pattern from pe to stl (now I had an stl in 2.5d), meshlab to create the obj for ZB, and import into ZB, sculpt as I mentioned, export out of ZB, meshlab to stl again and into designer.

Little demonstration on beer bottle using designer. Remember I do not have the 2d or the 3d suite.
1) beer bottle as image upside down as required for woods
2) beer bottle as background in designer
3) tracing bottle using spline tool
4) settings
5) using puffing tool
6) actual pattern made.
7) delete the woods beer bottle.

Oh forgot, thank you Henry

gregsolano
01-25-2013, 02:26 PM
I thought the comb idea is great but I was not sure how the cut out would work. I wonder if anyone thinks this might work better. I removed the cut out and used the carving depths on the front and back to create a thin cut out. I added some draft and put in some manual tabs to hold the piece in. I am still not sure the comb bristles wont break and if wood is used it would have to be a hard wood with the grain in the right direction but still worried about comb bristles breaking. I am thinking this might be good for corian. I am sure the experts could do a better job of chiming in.

thanks eelamb, when you download the project it contains dxf files, anyone with dxf converter want to convert and post for the rest of us? Thanks in advance.

This is in MPC format with all of the vectors joined together. The two halves are meant to be glued together with a laminated business card in the center. I set the board thickness to 1/8" so the finished project would not be too thick. A sled would have to be used.

I guess you could use centerline text, use the solid half only, and carve your name and address on the wood. Many variations.

I wanted to make this without having to flip the piece and I also noticed that the carved out slit for insertion of the card or ID needed to go all the way to the top so the ID card is removable. the lanyard would hold it in once it is in place so here is my version. Has not been carved yet but I am looking at doing so soon.

Steve with yours you can not slide the name tag into the open space, from the slot end. With the cutout (should be square) you can slide a business card into the holder.

I figured the card would be flexible enough to bend it into place. But, I like the idea of making the slot all the way out to the top edge also.

Made this quickly with some 1/4 oak I had left from Christmas ornaments. Made it for a friend to attach to a lanyard and carry his work access key around his neck. This is where he usually carries it in a vinyl lanyard. while it is a little bulkier than the vinyl ones surprisingly it is not that heavy. I messed up the star in my setup on the mpc and tried to fix it with paint and it did not come out to well but it was an 11 minute carve and I spent maybe ten minutes setting this up using steves file although I did extend the pocket all the way to the top so the card can just slip in. I sprayed it with lacquer and hung it to dry and these pics show it hanging and still wet.

After working with Designer 2.04, 1.187 seems a little clunky but, here is my modified version. The board thickness is 1/8 " but, when laminated together and sanded should produce a tag that isn't bulky. My submissions last night were kind of off the mark.

I guess I need to ask a not so smart question. All the project files for the luggage tag are set up for 1/8" thick material, but CW-Hal9000 indicated he used some left over 1/4" thick oak. I would have assumed that any 1/8" stock would have been a veneer plywood, but perhaps that is incorrect. I have never worked with solid stock that thin. Is it stabile enough and what is the favorite method for getting it to the 1/8" thickness. My planer won't go much thinner than 1/4" and it seems like a lot of sanding to get it thinner from there. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated....

eelamb
02-18-2014, 11:42 AM
John, to get thinner stock through the planner, just add a carrier board. What I do is take a 3/4 piece of plywood, sand and wax one surface, and glue a cross leg to one end. This is like a hook keeping the board from sliding through the planner. Now the planer has a raised table to work from. Thus you can use the planner on thinner stock. It is like adding a carrier board for the CW allowing you to carve thinner stock than the .5 min. thickness.

This might make it a little easier for those who don't want to plane the wood to 1/8". This is made with a pattern set to a depth of .75" so a full 3/4" board can be used. If you prefer a little thicker tag, just raise the pattern depth of the front, back or both.

EDIT: 2:35 pm 02/18/2014. I modified the pattern for the back so the card recess is a little shallower.

Here is the version I used to carve the one pictured here. I really like Steves new one with the carved curves but the nice thing about this one is that it carves in 11 minutes, does not need to be flipped, and uses only the 1/8 cutting bit. So for quick and easy carving its great. It is set up for a 6 1/2 inch by 6 1/2 inch x 1/4 inch thick boards which are sold at home centers and hobby shops. when you open you get a duplicate vertice notice which I can not find or get rid of but it carves fine. you can change the board to a 1/8 inch and adjust depths pretty easily.

Floyd it will be 2" dia. I guess, it will be for the lathe. That is the only equipment I have that can handle a 2" dia drill bit. My thought is to take a square piece of wood with the drill bit going though it as something like a shelf ornament.

Note: I am not sure how this one will work out as a rotary pattern, since the contours are not carvable. The down cuts may be straight down, unlike a real dril bit. But I plan to give it a try later tonight.

eelamb
04-06-2014, 08:24 PM
Ok here is the rotary pattern. It will work with all, made specifically for Ed's Rotary jig. This one is 12 inches long, and 2" wide.
Last image is what I had in mind. Cut a block of wood, drill a hole in it and put the bit through the hole, finish and place on shelf.
Or put on a base, and glue block, bit to base along with some shavings.

Thanks Floyd, well I shut down my shopping cart on my site, and I wanted the shared patterns to still be available, so I am posting them here. Not sure what I will do with the 200+ patterns/projects I had for sale.
So yes I will empty my closet of the old ones, many have never been seen here.

Hi Eddie; Did you ever think about putting them on CD or DVD's?

I offer my patterns on CD and DVD's; a CD holds about 200 pattern files and a DVD holds about 600 pattern files.

I am making my patterns stored on CD and DVDs, I like to store my patterns in files with the MPC, PTN, MPW and the + & - images in a grayscale format with a Screen Print of the MPC, for my own use.

This makes iteasy for me to find my patterns when I need them.

I purchased my first CW unit in 2007 and started to make my own patternsince then, not sure how many I have, but it is over 5000 since the last time Itried to count them.

Thanks BJB, I have no trouble locating or finding my patterns. Hard drive with all patterns including obj, stl, images, ptn, mpw etc are on one large drive, which is backed up nightly, to external drive, my windows server and on my website. So I have it covered where to place them, plus they are all categorized.

waiting on the wife, so decided to post a few more.
For the clock template, it will layout a clock face for you. Once you size it and place the numbers, just delete the template.

This now makes 51 uploaded, with 6 more in this group and 85 in the other group. I have deleted about 40 patterns I had made in the early days which were not good.

Thought I would do a series of clock faces. They should be quick to design and build as 3d models to port into CW.

First in the series is a quick unicorn clock face pattern.

The unicorn is not my 3d model but licensed under creative commons attribution 3.0 where you MUST give attribution/credit to ikkiz ( (http://www.blendswap.com/blends/view/72281)http://www.blendswap.com/blends/view/72281). The rest of the pattern is mine.

Ed thanks.

Here is my next pattern. It was more an exercise in design. I don't plan to carve it but it doesn't look to be that bad, at least on screen. Not exactly sure how well the small parts at the bottom will carve.

Hopefully it is useful to someone. Software says a little over two hours on normal. The grey image is the 3d model I built. CW software does a great job in translating to pattern.

The pattern includes the front facade and a two sided carve for the faux weights. There are electronic pendulum clocks starting at 10 dollars out in "the internet" if someone wants to build this. I used basic squares to build up a shingled roof as an option but simple 1/4" plywood may be better.

If someone tries this please let me know if it worked or not or if it needs to be tweaked.

Edit: I just saw I messed up on the numbers. reloaded the pattern but with the right number order. Sorry for anyone that downloaded the previous pattern.

nice but you can't change the numbers on this

oscarl48
05-02-2015, 06:59 AM
Yes, unfortunately it was built completely as a 3d model so unless you have the 3d model or software to modify 3d models you are stuck with whatever I build...which you make a great suggestion. Went back and removed the numbers so now you can add whatever ones you want.

The original post has the numbers fixed as well on the pattern. I didn't update the pictures because I was lazy and they were only for reference.

Thank you. That was a needed tweak.

My wife claims its a foon (fork+spoon). I think its still a spork (spoon+fork). But either way a quick little model I wanted to play as a two sided carving. I have not carved it yet so no clue on how it will come out. Use adequate levels of skepticism and modify as needed. ptn's included for your pattern playing pleasure.

They should make good salad tossers.

p.s. as I posted this I had a brilliant idea. Dragon hand salad tossers. More to follow tomorrow.

I think I have tried place tap on this type of 2 sided carve and placing buttons or squares works better. Place tabs is designed for pierced carving at the bottom. Just going by my remembering which at my age is not good.

You can place the tabs at any depth you want. They are useful.

Have any of you had issues when placing tabs distorts the pattern? I've made patterns and spent quite a bit of time on placement of tabs to avoid distortion. My objective when placing them is to have the end result resemble the tabs on an auto cutout with outline where outside the pattern and not inclusive. Recommendations??

Seen that also. I think (oops :) ) that it is the function of how far over the pattern the tab line is and the width/height of your tab settings.

Bit Optimization was introduced for user tabs in 2.006. I think this helps with the nearby damage that can happen to the pattern edge due to the tabs.

I think the place tabs tool is only active for placing tabs across a pierced carve region. Otherwise, the button on the toolbar isn't active.

EDIT: in version 1.187 the button is active but does nothing except on a pierced carve region.

Not true. You just have to pick the depth.

DianMayfield
08-07-2015, 07:37 AM
So, tabs are only available for pierced regions, correct? I draw a circle (or outline a ptn), assign a bit with the same depth as my board, and while the tool is "available" (not greyed out), it does not actually place a tab as it does on a pierced pattern.

Is this expected, or might I be doing something wrong? I can successfully place tabs on pierced items. Using designer 3.

zan29
08-07-2015, 08:22 AM
Dian, tabs are always set automatically for any cutout. The moment you have a pierced pattern, than you have to add tabs manually.

DianMayfield
08-07-2015, 08:44 AM
Yup, that's when I use the cutout feature. But when I want to control where the tabs are (invariably automatically put on the point of a star) I would like another option, like assigning a bit to an outline set low enough to cut through :)

Been busy learning more modeling techniques and building patterns. So needed a quick break so did a fast little fun pattern. I like how it came out. The mpc is in designer 1.xx format and is set up as a one sided carve only so the clock mechanism will be flush with back. You should be able to use a clock mechanism for a 3/4" clock face. I included the pattern if you want to change it up a bit and carve a recess for the back of the clock for a different clock mechanism.

Disclaimer: I measured nothing on this pattern. I literally did everything by eye. When you set up your carve ensure your clock mechanism will work for your project.

Not a Carvewright project, yet, but I've been working on this. Making several changes along the way. Would like to be able to cut all the gears on the CW. Any suggestions would be nice. I'm not much on designer but willing to try anything.

Very cool. Did a quick concept drawing. It actually looks fairly simple. I count just 8 cutouts for the gears with the CW plus the action arms. The rest you could do with a drill and table saw/hand saw.

oscarl48
02-26-2016, 11:57 PM
here are some super quick mpc for the gears and the cylinder head for the piston for ideas only based on my concept drawing. I have not test cut them so have no idea if they work. I have company coming in tomorrow so won't have a chance to play with this until Sunday. I have some test carvings for some new patterns I am developing but I may have a chance to throw these into the carving schedule.

oscarl48
02-27-2016, 08:21 AM
I just realized I am shanghaiing your project. I am backing off unless you actually are needing any of these things. The software I use, blender 3d has scripting modules for gears which allows me to make gears super fast. I hit a button and a gear is generated. So if you need gear patterns just let me know what size, number of teeth, addendum, dedendum, and any spoke features you want.

There are also a ton of gear generating software resources.

Here is one that is pretty cool:
http://geargenerator.com/#200,200,100,6,1,0,0,4,1,8,2,4,27,-90,0,0,16,4,4,27,-60,1,1,12,1,12,20,-60,2,0,60,5,12,20,0,0,0,2,-563

It generates a svg graphic that can then be ported into CW designer using a software tool then outlined, grouped, and then made into a pattern.

Inkscape is a free scalable vector graphic program that can save to png which can then be used by designer.

https://inkscape.org/en/

there is of course the widely known software tool from woodgear.com:

http://woodgears.ca/gear_cutting/template.html

Oscar

Oscarl48, oh by no means do I care for you posting this. There are a lot of pieces and parts for this project and they all have to mesh and be in sink. Thats why I posted this. If you want I can always email you blue print parts. All I ask is for no one to put this in the CW store unless I get a free files package. It's been fun making this, a lot of trial and error. Most was in fact made on the table saw, band saw, scroll saw and drill press.
My next one is going to be of a V-twin once I get this one down pat. Thanks for any and all your help.

oscarl48
02-27-2016, 02:33 PM
Nope. This project is all yours. I removed the mpc's. I have plenty of other honey do projects that are keeping me busy. Let me know if you do need any specific patterns made and I can email them directly to you.

I am designing a gallery style easel for my wife right now. Not a CW project but should be a good piece to stay busy on. It will be a more traditional woodworking piece with a lot of mortice and tenon jointery.
