Here's a pattern that was freely offered up on the artcam forum-- I had to do quite a bit of work to clean it up, but it seemed to come out quite nicely in the end. Hope you all enjoy it- please stop me if these patterns start getting too redundant or y'all think I should slow down. This really is a blast, and though it is getting easier with each pattern, I must admit that I still have the utmost respect for those out there making the patterns completely from scratch-- the learning curve is quite steep.

Keep them coming Lawrence, I did the same thing when I first got into Silo, it is a great way to learn and review how the patterns are created.

You wouldn't have the back side of the Nutcracker would you? Would look nice as a full figure model on a stand. Kinda like the wooden soldier mpc that's out there.

Maybe someone else with more 3d experience-I can email the STL to someone, but even zipped it is 23mb so cannot be uploaded here

Lawrence do you have Pattern Editor? if so save the file as a mpw, and upload it here. We can take that and create the stl from it.

and check your pm for message.

Lawrence check your pm and send it via email. The mpw as saved from pattern editor will allow editing the file, and saving it to STL format.

A .3ds file of a similar nutcracker can be downloaded here: http://archive3d.net/?a=download&id=15350 If I was at home, I would convert it to .stl slice it and post it here.
But,, again my job is interfering with my fun.

This is the nutcracker (modified) that edzbaker gave a link to. Showing a front and back of the model. I removed the base, and back handle since it would not carve right with the handle.

This is just the model right now.

Notice it does not have an actual face, or mustache as show in the image on the site. The model shown there was a surface painting (render).
Thus it can be painted as shown in the image below, or I can add the extra features, so it will be easier to paint them.

Decided to make the pattern without the details. May add details later if I find an interest.

Edit: This sounds bad, it should say if there is enough interested in the pattern.

Keeping with Oct theme, here is a pattern some may want. It is too large to fit here, so the pattern is on my site under shared patterns-holidays. Yes this is a shared pattern so feel free to download it. Instructions for downloading is on the shared pattern section. There is no need to register or log in.

I uploaded the PTN here, see they have increased the size limit.

Hey Lawrence -

They make these really cool LED bulbs that change colors, or you can set to stay on one color (one of them being RED) - they range from 9 to 12 colors. So if you do a search for "A19/LED/PARTY" you can find it - should run about 10 bucks. They are awesome in lithopane boxes. EDIT ... they all seem to be made by FEIT.

Thanks all-- the original artist deserves the credit though- (which is why I'm linking all the patterns I post to the original) Once you post it on sketchup it is fair for use.

I'm really just changing the file to suit the carvewright and am glad you all can enjoy the material as well. You'd be astonished how many other sites have free 3d files that you can download, manipulate in meshlab, and then import as an STL. Many/most of these sites allow you to use the material in a final project but do not give permission to distribute the pattern. Sketchup is an exception and you are free to use as you'd like.

I highly (very very highly) recommend purchasing the STL importer. It (in conjunction with the free program meshmixer) allow you to legally and ethically import thousands of free patterns from the internet for use.

Thank again all- I just want to make sure I'm not taking any more credit than I deserve (which is very very little to none) for these patterns

I didn't catch that the first time I read it, so you draw on it with chalk and then spray finish over the chalk? that sounds very interesting and maybe easier than painting. Are there any videos demonstrating this technique?

I've never heard about nupastel chalks. Can you tell us about it a little more on how you paint your projects? Also, where do you buy these chalks?

http://www.prismacolor.com/products/pastels This site tells about the chalks and has links to where you can buy them. I'm sure I got mine from Amazon - I was going to use them for another project that I haven't got around to because of this carving obsession! I got a box of 72 soft colors, and 12 hard. I love the variety of shades. They blend very nicely. I'm still experimenting of course! If you look at my album, all of the landscapes that I made from pictures are colored with chalks. They would have taken a lot longer using acrylics! On the lovebirds, I had already put a coat of natural stain mixed with a little puritan pine, but then decided I wasn't happy with it and went for the color. Wish I had started with my plain pine board. With the moose, I went over the chalk with a bit of stain to deepen the colors. After I chalk, I wipe it in with a corner of paper towel to blend and set it in. I learned to put masking tape around the frame so I don't slop chalk from my hands on it. Once it's on there, it's hard to sand off!

eelamb

Colleen and others Hoby Loby has chalks, along with stiff bristle brushes for applying it. I use it along with acrylics, by painting the acrylics, then shadow/blend or age using chalk. Plus chalk alone where where I want an almost transparent effect. As Colleen mentioned then coat it with a clear finish. Now I am not the painting expert, I leave that up to the wife. You do have to rub it into the wood, and try to keep it off your fingers or you will transfer it to areas you do not wish the chalk to be.

Question for you...is it possible to re-calc/re-mesh the triangulation of the original model to a smaller tolerance to achieve a smooth surface and eliminate the faceting? If not, that's OK - that's what sandpaper is for! ;)

As I was going through the grocery line today I saw Valentine's Day is coming around the corner. So another quick model.

Disclaimer :)
I am using these as learning opportunities to get better knowledge on using my software tools and not really focused on the models but more on how to make them. So an apology for not great models. I am not really taking the time to clean them up but it shows how quick they can be done. It took about 15 minutes to build a 3d model in blender 3d and then move into CW. So about 20 minutes total. And hopefully someone can use them for something at some point.

oscarl48
02-01-2015, 03:59 PM
I needed a little break from a project I am working on that caused me to use a brown marker in my underpants. I was wiring something that I did not ground properly and had a nice 20K Volt arc. I may have missed a heart beat or two as it dawned on me on what I had done (and survived :D).

So here is another Valentine's Heart pattern using a heart pattern with a basic circle cut out (I took a little bit more time and care on this one). Perfect for that witty saying. No I am not carving the second picture. It is being used only for illustrative purposes.

Heart pattern included for your own design building pleasure. Again blender 3d to CW port.

I am still playing with the stl importer and had an idea for a Christmas ornament. Carved it out today in red cedar to see how it would come out. Well its a little bit on the huge side (4 inches across). 1 hour and 40 min in normal.

But if someone wants to play with it later in the year when its actually time for these things here it is. I made it so it would be an even four pieces at 3/4in but doesn't have to be. I am enclosing the mpc I used to carve the sample but also the ptn if you want to modify them. It is symmetrical so its really only two pieces mirrored. The year is added as text so you can modify what it states or use it year to year (blank slate).

The design idea was for one side to have the year and the other blank area is to glue a picture in there to personalize it.

This can be considered late or early. I actually just finished this one up a few weeks back. Started it back in Nov of 2014, but never got it completed. First off I did not make the patterns in this scene, I collected them and assembled them to make this scene.
This scene is LARGE 30"+ in length and still looks good down to 17". Below that detail will be lost. Some draft needs to be used for the thin parts to prevent breakage while carving. These images do not show the pattern justice for you can not see all the details until you bring it into designer.

Thank you gents. Here is another not perfect pattern. Took about 1/2 an hour to make and not really happy with it because, to get any detail you have to carve at least .5" or carve small.

It probably could make a nice tree ornament if mirrored and carved through and then glued together. hmmm ...idea.

Nice work! Thank you for your generous sharing! Will try to carve this and get it finished and donate to a local Deli for their holiday decor!

Thanks all. Happy Easter.

We just had potentially two small tornados and have been in the dark for the last few hours. Power just came back. Spring weather in East Texas. Got to love it.

Hope every has a wonderful day.

Does anyone have a sign pattern for the 4th of July? I am looking for something that would fit on a board a6x11.25x.75. Thank you!

Here is a quick pattern for 2020.

Happy 4th!

Pattern is just the fireworks and flag and fairly shallow to keep it small. Use at least medium draft.
