Just ordered all the parts for my new computer so I am dying to get back into it...went to town with this computer..intel i990 extreme can overclock to 4.0 stable, 24gb of ram, nvidia quadro 4000, ssd hard drive..all geared for modelling..dying to get it.

rkm,

Great work. Do you have anymore heraldic patterns you're willng to sell or share? Specifically, I am doing a project for a friend with his family's coat of arms and need an arm holding a chalice and a crossletfitchee like the ones below. I am willing to hire if that is what it takes. Thanks!

Thank you swobee. Here is a crossletfitchee. I can try the hand & chalice for you, I'll send you a message when it's done.

I bought a few collections of heraldric vectors from Amorial Gold...
http://www.heraldryclipart.com/

The family crest collection was about $50. Any artwork or patterns you make from the vectors are royalty free. I think I have a few thousand heraldry images and not nearly enough free time to make CarveWright patterns. I'd like to start selling PTNs but am giving them away for now.

The more simple vectors like shields and crosses can be loaded into the CW designer after changing the colors within Photoshop, GIMP, or Windows Paint in such a way that CW will respect height. More organic objects like helmets, animals, or curtains need to be sculpted in a program like Blender 3d or Zbrush or the pattern will appear very flat.

I do have a folder of arms and hands similar to your image, most are holding weapons or martial items, and are more bent at the elbow. I can try to merge an open palm, clothed arm, and chalice, then sculpt it.

Here are some things I have so far...

I was playing around with making different rope patterns or making rope in general...was very easy once I figured it out..few cylinders and a bend deformer...started cutting it up and peicing together ...wasn't making anything in particular..anyways came out with this frame...lol not truly square..but it is what it is...not off too bad. getting the "miters" right in 3d was similar to the chop box...trim carpenter days from college came in handy

Here is a sheet of rosettes set up on a 29" X 14" board. It has 3.5" factored in on each end so as to stay under the rollers.

There are new CarveWright users joining all the time so I wanted to put this together for them to play with.

I like to use line (Vector) drawings and bit profiles to create as much as I can. This cuts down on machine time, is faster to produce and easy to do. I have VERY little imagination so that shows it doesn't take much to produce these. You do have to think in 3 dimensions though.

Look at each line, circle or square and you will see that it uses a few if the CW Bits. The carving bit is not used at all. Play with the Bit Cut profile as well as this varies the cut depth in the Z axis for the desired result.

There is no reason that these cannot be used on the rotary jig as well. The most important thing to remember is not to cut to deep on each pass. I generally use .15 to .2 max depth per pass depending on the bit and material I will be cutting.

For you pros.. Sorry to bore you. I wanted this to help us beginners.

Enjoy!

Thanks Tom

Glad someone could use it. Those are VERY simple to make. I was just playing making knots and playing with rendering and was like maybe it would make an ok pattern. It still amazes me how good a pattern you can get out of Blender's bas releif plug. You can get a height map out of most 3d programs by rendering the model at a 90 degree angle to the camera but most loses detail the deeper the model in 3d space. The bas releif plug in kinda "squishes" it in and keeps the detail and depth propotionality.

Many on here make clocks, some from scratch, some using others patterns, changing parts to suit their needs. Well I have created a pattern for everyone to use in making those clocks. It is meant to be placed on the board, sized, add your numbers at indicated spots, then remove the template. This makes it easy and fast to create those clocks, and it is accurate.

It seems that all these nice ideas people are sharing are being done in the new versions of software ... So it means that they won't open for me... I guess I'm gonna have to leave the carvewright cause it's to expensive to keep up... Plus there's the expense of all the constant repairs for my 2 machines .. For what it would cost me to get up to date is enough for a down payment on Pilot Pro CNC ... Plus the results,,, you look at some folks projects and you can tell immediately their project didn't come off a carvewright machine.. Guess Carvewright is just gonna leave folks like me behind ... Keep your eyes open I may be posting my machines in the for sale section soon .....

zan29
01-31-2014, 03:43 PM
I agree keeping up with 2 CW can get expensive. I bought a CNC recently and I must say that one compensates for the other. I need both of them to do my work but my CW will always be my first baby even though it's been giving headaches. I would keep one if I were you and replace the other with a CNC.

Hey Zan,,, I have decided that I'm not even gonna sell my machines... As things happen I will use one as a parts machine ... When I run outta parts I am just gonna remove both machine from circulation and scrap em .. 2 Less machines to buy parts for... These 2 machines generated a couple hundred dollars a yr in parts for CW .. Not enough I guess .... I don't mind supporting a company so it can stay around and grow but,, by the same token they have help us stay in our hobby shops or businesses too .... Plus the quality that comes off a CNC is far superior then what comes out of a CW machine.. When you look at peoples projects you know rite-a-way that it didn't come out of a CW ....

That's a good idea and as far as quality goes, I think the CW carves as well as a CNC, just depends on your settings I guess.

The patterns have always been free right here on the forum and people still sell on ebay. I don't think carvewright will advertise the free patterns on forum because they want to sell them in the pattern depot. Which is why pattern makers are offered the opportunity to sell on the depot also. The problem is that they take something like 50%.

We are taking the "Architectural or Decorative" thread off topic gang.

But!

I am going to thump you a little bit on this one ;)!

Total agreement about the patterns and Ebay.

I do not think LHR specifically advertises "free patterns" but they do make new users aware of the forum and it's function as being a support system for the user. The STARTU members do push it strongly with new contacts, or they should be, as a resource for anything CarveWright. I also feel LHR strongly supports the pattern sharing on the forum as it helps to demonstrate the different design capabilities of the software packages and helps drive sales. They are just as upset as we are about the Ebay sellers and the impact it has on the forum pattern sharing.

I thought the commission rate was a little high also but then realized they are the ones doing the advertising and the other costs of running a on line store system. It is the place that most user goes to for CarveWright products. I've sold more in one month through the depot than what I've sold off of my web site since I've had it up.

I will see if I can get these "off topic" posts moved to more appropriate area...

Mike thanks. These are fast easy fun pattern builds.

Clint. blender is amazing software but isn't anywhere as user friendly as commercial products. I wish I wasn't so slow at learning this stuff and had more artist talent. The learning curve is definitely becoming a little shallower but still fairly steep after a year. Playing with software today since Shreveport went from wow its nice to holy cow its hot. Don't feel like doing anything except sit with a cold beer in my hand.

Here is another rosette. I am calling it boom. Gives me a feel of an cartoon explosion. Didn't start that way but that's how it ended. :-)

oscarl48
06-07-2015, 09:30 PM
One last one for the night. Started playing with bezier curves and trying to figure out how to use them in my models. The pattern is again something that I just threw together as I played with the different elements so not planned. It still looks pretty at least in my eyes so hopefully useful to someone down the road. The pattern is only the x pattern the inner circle I added in designer to balance it visually a little better.

Does blender have a "cut" tool?

In 3ds Max...I put the image of the scroll or leaf I want to model on an image and lock/freeze the plane...then trace over it with the spline tool for the outline of the shape....then convert the spline to a poly...then use the cut tool to add main edges and fill in with quads...all flat at first...then after that's done...just start pushing and pulling the edges for desired shape

oscarl48
03-29-2016, 05:52 PM
Thank you. Yes it does. I have to figure it out. In the baroque dragon I modeled it loop to loop but it took close to 6 hours to complete. Way too long. I am going to try this method and see how it works for me. The problem I've been having is having the edge loops I need in the wrong sections. That just means poor planning on my part. Started last night a model but deleted it after about an hour when I realized I had placed all the edge loops I needed in the wrong areas.

Thanks for the video. I'll look at it tonight after work. I completely agree with. Modeling has pretty much supplanted all my other hobbies, including woodworking.

P.S. It is amazing what a difference a little bit of instruction and figuring out a few minor things make for modeling. Thanks for showing me the tutorial. I was already close but the video got me over my learning curve. I had the aha moment. My latest model only took about 4 hours and I am really pleased with it. The dragon was close to 7 hours. I'll see how it carves tomorrow.

I now have one piece in my architectural elements library. I can see how these will be much quicker once I have the techniques down.

Old brick wall framed in diamond plate. I thought the juxtaposition of old and crumbling and new and modern modern material was just cool as a possible art piece. The pattern is only of the brick wall. The diamond plate was previously shared. Yeah I carved my initials in the wall. You all can too. Just invert a cool font into it. :D

Its been a while since I have focused on trying to make new patterns. I've been focused on learning 3d modeling more but I sometimes miss making patterns. I sat down to try and build something but nothing is inspiring me. So in the mean time made a quick doodle. Not sure if of any use to anyone but I a little different.

Pattern is only one corner. Mirrored for the other sides. Can be used as a building block.

Got a new addon to blender that makes very cool coil pattern based on math models

Oscar, I haven't thanked you for the moon, it was perfect!

I must admit I spent 4 hrs this morning watching Blender videos after you posted the link. That right click difference was an AH HA moment when I realized that's why I was so frustrated with the software - apparently all the other videos I had seen didn't specifically mention that shift from "normal" habits!

Much appreciated!

Dian, you are very welcome. I hope to see some awesome patterns made by you. Once you get passed that AH HA moment it does get easier. After three years of me playing with the software I have now reached a point that I feel like an advanced beginner. :)

I am now going through the same emotion with new software. My one point of frustration with blender has been its sculpting capability. Its amazing but nowhere near the capability of the industry standard of zbrush. So I purchased zbrush last month and I have not opened it more than twice. I am dreading going through the same process of learning a new software suite that is incredibly advanced and complicated.

FYI: To create that type of pattern. Apply an image texture to the geometry. Subdivide it until it has a dense geometry and then use the displace modifier using the image texture. Super easy once you have the procedure down.

Still in the process of a partial kitchen remodel. Installed some white stone back splash which was only 10 inches from the counter top which needed some sort of transition to the rest of the wall. Made a quick custom railing border to visually separate the two elements of the counter top and the rest of the wall. My wife wanted a Namaste lily incorporated as part of the design. Carved 6 ft of the railing which I will install tomorrow.

Looks good, am sure she appreciates you being able to provide a custom beautiful product. I haven't gotten into any 'sales' yet, don't have time, but am sure like you the custom work is always in demand.

lol. Everyone wants me to build them stuff at half the cost of materials. So I pretty much only build for myself and make gifts for friends. Carpentry is my decompression and first hobby from my day to day job. Though I have to admit pattern (model building) and 3d graphics are slowly creeping up on woodworking. It will never over pass it but it is a lot of fun.

Here is a picture of the border. Installed it this morning.

Michael, thank you. Its nice to finally see some progress on that darn kitchen. Butcher block counter top, stone back splash, new floors, new stove hood blower, and painting the cabinets/new hardware. I still have the other side of the kitchen to do but I'm doing them in stages where I can complete them in doable bite sizes.
