There are 35 items with "Bear" in the title, in this link.
http://forum.carvewright.com/misc.php?do=showattachments&t=2046
Once you bring up the link, go to EDIT > FIND and type the word you wish to find.

You will also find lots of bears in the Pattern Depot (Store).

He is actually a belium, and his main function was to pull a wagon. Belonged to a friend in Herman Missouri who owns a winery. They still have 4 others, they are more for the people who come to the winery, and roam the 15 acres, but put to work pulling the wagons at fairs. This one was very gentle, but dumb as they come, always forgot how big he was and destroyed everything.

I use Corel draw, Corel Photo editor, Gimp, and the Pattern editor. Corel is just to get the "Picture" like I want it. Gimp is to make the Grayscale, and the Pattern editor is used to smooth out and manipulate the pattern. There's lots of tutorials on using Gimp on u-tube, and Ed Lamb has made and posted some good ones on the forum also.

Oscar, are you using blender?? If yes, how do you work this out if you don't mind my asking?

oscarl48
08-04-2015, 08:38 AM
Suzanne,

Good morning. Yes I used blender. I am not sure what part of the process you are asking about so here goes.

I usually start with reference images if I can find it or draw it (top, front, right sides). I then build the model. This is where I am still a beginner at picking the right primitive to start and choosing the right tools to create the mesh I want. A problem for me is my lack of formal education on this art stuff as well. Once the mesh is done there are some tools to distort it to further give me the look I am going for. Probably all very similar to moi3d. Blenders sculpting tools keep getting better and better as well so you can also play with like it was a lump of clay.

In blender the stl image is taken as if looking down (z axis) so I have to rotate the image to give me the view I want. Then depending on the height of the model I try to optimize for depth. I start by either deleting the parts that aren't visible or decreasing parts of the model in the z axis and hope its not too distorted.

I then export it as an stl which I open in CW designer. My computer is not very powerful so sometimes the mesh is not dense enough and it will show up as holes at the different seams. I'll use CW to clean up the pattern and done.

Sorry for the long winded explanation and not sure if I answered your question.

P.S. added the picture to show the original model I made on the bottom. I used this to then stage it to try to show motion by tweaking the mesh. I wasn't happy with the tail so I elongated the top portion.

The other part is that blender can export in all major 3d and vector formats for manipulation in other programs.

After a year I finally figured out how to save hair as part of the stl from blender 3d. You have to change the vector to mesh data and then solidify by extending the line mesh for thickness. Here is the lemur test I had done earlier but now with blender created hair.

Not that I am very good at it yet. There are several dynamics involved in preparing the hair. Thickness, length, direction and location. I have a lot more to play with before I am good at it but I now have a starting point.

Godzirrrraaaaa!!!! My wife hates it when I randomly scream this out in non-appropriate locations, i.e.nice restaurants, picnics, watching movies, dinner...etc.

I screwed up the hands, feet and a bunch of other body parts but again I am only doing practice sessions learning how to sculpt in blender.

Jeff, thanks.

This is Godzilla when Godzilla was a real monster in the 1960's . No CG required. He knew karate and could stomp mock cardboard cities with the best of them with plenty of pyrotechnics. Please disregard the man inside the rubber suit. :)

I was not entirely happy with this pattern but I didn't want to throw it away so maybe someone can use it out there in CW land.

Enclosed is a cat paw print pattern for your enjoyment. Can be used normal or inverted depending on the final project.

Cleaning my pattern folder. Here is a practice piece. It's not very good but before I delete from my files I'll throw in here just in case someone can use it. The idea was a heart created by the dragon head but execution was poor.

Don't feel like cleaning the pattern up. The antlers had some tear out. If planning on carving you will have to apply a small draft and if you can get away with it medium draft to minimize tear out. Otherwise it did carve well.

Thank you oscarl48 for the running deer!!! I'll be able to use that on a out door sign. Thank you.

Awesome. I hope it works well for you. I did have some tear out on the antlers during the test carve so recommend small/medium draft unless carving in hardwood that takes detail well.

Dan made a comment recently that using splines was a good skill to have so I've started playing with them. Dan is right again.

This is not a great pattern but it literally took 3 minutes to make using only Designer. With a little bit of time and some patience I can see some impressive patterns being made using only splines with only Designer basic. No other software needed.

For me its a lot easier to use blender but that has taken me over two years learning that software to say that. This technique could be learned in about 2 minutes in designer. Would be great to see some other basic patterns made using this technique.

There are gems out there. There is a company that is 3d scanning works of art that are truly amazing. They scanned the following sculpture named Two Hounds Tethered. It is an amazing sculpture. Did a quick pattern from the scan. CW pattern not optimized and not perfect.

Original sculpture by Georges Lucien Vacossin in Paris, France.

Did a test render to play with 3d materials and lighting.

Gents and Gals, enclosed you will find a honey bee pattern. Without color it looks just like a bug but if you add beautiful colors it will transform to a industrious honey bee. :)

That was my thought when I started caving hive panels. Not sure about other states else, but here the hive has to have the name and phone number of the apiary on them.
