View Full Version : Carving With the Grain
Anyone make a regular practice of carving with the grain? The last couple of projects I've carved, I've glued up boards edgewise (side by side) and cut so that the carving truck goes with the grain. Seems to be much coarser chips and not as stressful on the bit.

I"ve run several projects through carving with the Grain,
and often noted the same results as you on Poplar, Pine, plus some Birch.
But I can't really say I that I do it as regular practice, only when it suits the project.
Not to mention wood splits at the grain and carving along the grain weakens the board.

I can see where this wouldn't be a good thing on large projects but seems to work pretty good on small ones. This weekend I carved MT's "Schnoz Box" project all with the grain. Very easy large "fuzzies" to sand off with my Dremel. Now ready to glue on the nose and apply the finish.
