I think, in some cases folks may apply some paint to get the effect they wish.

Hey Joe, if you follow the instructions in the tricks & tips that Michael just gave you it will work. I've made several myself and I am very pleased with most of my carvings. The one thing I've learned was to edit the edge of every picture using the pattern editor, if you zoom in close and look at the edge of most pictures you import it will be a light green border, you will want to get rid of that green line. And make sure you set the depth and heigth as suggested in the article. (.180 & 450)

What material do you make the Lithophane carving out of and ware do you buy it

Almost all use 1/4" or 1/2" Corian for the lithopane. Sources vary from the Carvewright site, to Ebay or local shops such a countertop shops.
I bought my first pieces 1/4" paper sized off Ebay then got lucky and got several sheets 2' x 8' for 20$ at a local auction. I believe there is
a member on the forum who has some available at times, try a search.

I have a few questions to ask.

1) what works better Corian or cast Acrylic, is ther a big difference ?
2) Do you need to Convert Image to gray scale (http://forum.carvewright.com//attachment.php?attachmentid=9990&d=120433)
3) Do you set the thickness of the project board to the thickness of the sled?
