Does anyone know what the spring in the flex shaft does?
About 2 inches of the bit end is broken off.
Machine still carves fine and shaft is not running hot.
Just don't want to be destroying something else.

I believe it's to help minimize the flexshaft wire core from rubbing against the inside rubber tube, reducing friction/heat. Perhaps it gives a little support for the flexshaft curvature as well. (guessing)

And... it is a silencer to reduce noise. I ran my machine for a very long time with a couple of inches missing from one end (not that you should) without a problem. I wouldn't recommend running it any longer than it takes to get a replacement, however. Once it starts to break it can break again anytime.

Spindle Flex Assembly can be ordered from LHR. It is $75 plus $12 S&H.

No, you cannot purchase the spring or the core by itself. If one goes out you have to purchase the entire flex assembly, $75 + $12 shipping.
