Anyone know if Rockler 62984 or 82652 will work as cutting bits?

And also, the stock cutting bit that comes with the machine....is that HSS or Carbide?

I beleive that both the cuttng and carving bit are both solid carbide.

Dirk,

The stock bit is carbide but it is 1/8 inch

As I said before I use both of these bits with great effectiveness but they must be used with a Rock Chuck or possibly the new LHR chuck but I don't know for sure. Carbide cuts smoother but when using a 1/4" HSS I get nice, clean cuts when run at a .25 depth. Of course this is not for small inner cuts like fret work and you must remember that the machine is programed for 1/8 inch bit so you have to add an 1/8 of an inch to the cut out pattern. But if you want a good, viable, cheaper, unbreakable alternative to the stock bits which cut great but break when you sneeze wrong.. these are the deal....

Actually, it looks like we can get the 1/8" in Carbide, from Freud for the same price as the HSS from Rockler.

I'm sort of confused about this because carbide in non metallic. The bits that LHR offers will attract to a magnet. They may have other materials added to make them more durable. Maybe someone with more knowledge than I can clear this up.

From awnsers.com (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Is_Tungsten_Carbide_magnetic)

Is Tungsten Carbide magnetic?

Answer

Tungsten carbide products are often made from tungsten carbide powder cemented with another metal. This metal is often cobalt or nickel which is magnetic. 6% cobalt by weight is a typical percentage. Cobalt cemented tungsten carbide is magnetic enough to be picked up with a strong magnet. Tungsten carbide by itself would have very low to no ferromagnetic properties.

I use those bits in my Leigh Jig D4r. Never considered using them in the Carvewright.
