How long do the bits last for the machine. What is a good way of checking to see if they are still sharp enough for use. Thanks to anyone who gives input.

ifyou get a fuss on back side of cut that is a sign and any burning .
cleaning with oven cleaner or acetone will help

I agree, fuzz on the top of the board at the edge of the cut.

If you get burning, it is usually a dirty bit or the Bit is flopping around in the QC. Time for a new QC and bit holders.
