X but no Y or Z

I am trying to carve a sign using centerline text. Three signs worked perfectly, but now it won't carve. After measuring the board and checking surfaces and briefly rotating the bit, it says it is routing, but it isn't. The motor isn't rotating and the bit sits motionless above the board. The board moves in the X axis like would be expected if it were cutting, but no Y and no Z.

Any suggestions?

My suggestion to myself (but I put off doing it because I'm tired of taking off the lid) was to clean out the dust, check the cut motor switch and reseat the cables.

It worked -- for now at least.
