First we will need to know which firmware version you are on. the calibration methods change with firmware revision.

the latest 1.162, i followed the directions in the service manual for x axis but still get the error

I think Micheal Tyler coverd the new calibration routines in last months tips and tricks. Im not sure they have been updated in the service manuals. I would looks at his write up. If you can't find it.. let me know and I'll find the link for you.

i read that and did all the necessary math and still get it. I assume when my machine says that it is at 888.955, and it measures about a 1/2 in short. i add about 16 units (roughly 16/32 in) to the number which would take me to 904.955. According to the tips and tricks and the service manual.

A calibration range error means you're typing in a number that's too big. I can't tell you what exactly the maximum number you can type in because it depends on the original calibration on your machine.

What you can do is keep trying smaller numbers until it accepts it.
