This Christmas I turned a bunch of screwdrivers for gifts. You can see them here if you want. http://www.rockler.com/blog/index.cfm/2009/11/6/Turning-Screwdrivers-in-the-Zone Since then, I have had a thought floating around about doing a carved screwdriver. Last night I came up with this. It actually feels more like a tap handle than a screwdriver. LOL.

I'm prepared to take a good ribbing on this one so let me have it. LOL.

Nice work - kinda keeps you from whacking it with a hammer, though, doesn't it?

Hi Jim,

No Ribbing for me, I've love to make a couple of Tap handles for my oldest "Jon"
He's in to Home Brewing and needs has a two Tap set-up the his future Pub in the rec-room downstairs.

I See some possible good money to be made for Custom Carved Tap (and screw Driver) Handles out there.

Thanks guys. Now that I sit here looking at the picture I think the lions head would look cool on top of a walking stick.

First thing I thought was tap handle. I have a kegerator from my homebrewed beer that is getting some new taps soon. I never even considered making tap handles with my CC until this post!

Jim,

Nice project and I have been a admirer of your work for a long time at the other woodworking forums.

I purchased this brass tread adapter from Northern Brewer (http://www.northernbrewer.com/brewing/kegging/tap-handles)(cost $2.25) well over a year ago to make a tap handle but just haven't done so yet. You just bore your hole in the bottom of the handle screw it in and tread the handle on and your done.

Oldjoe... I am with you... when "tap handle" was mentioned, being a machinist, the first thing i thought of was the type of tap handle used to hold and turn threading taps.... LOL... Talk about seing thing from different perspectives!... I was really struggling with why you would want a lion on the handles, even if it did look really really cool! :D

Happy carving guys!... very cool project!

Well I'm glad I gave several people a new idea for using the CW to make tapper handles. I scanned the lion head and then did a 2 sided carve on a 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 x 11 piece of cherry. I then turned the handle on the lathe. I imagine you could do a 2-sided carve for that also, but the lathe make for easy sanding. I'm a home brewer myself so I'll be interested in seeing some tap handles if anyone make one.

Hi Dan,

I bought a couple 8 packs at Rockler a few months ago for the Wood Shop
--- Guess I better get busy drawing up some Tap Handles in Designer

They Can be installed with screwdriver, threaded insert wrench (http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=2348) or threadcd insert power drive (http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=2348).

Check your local Ace Hardware, they have several sizes of threaded inserts at ours, they don't have the insert tool but I use a screwdriver. I mounted the rollup for the solar cover on the pool using them and I use nylon screws so if one wrings off it is easy to remove. Have used for a lot of different projects where I want to be able to take something off and on multiple times.

Rick,

Thanks and I just measured the one I have and the inside diameter is .309 5/16. I see they offer them in different sizes.

Product Description

Make your own tap-handle by drilling a 1/2" hole to a depth of 5/8". Screw this brass insert into the hole. This provides standard tap-handle threads that will allow your homemade tap handle to fit on any standard faucet.

If you want to make sure the brass insert stays in place, just in case you ever want to remove the metal rod, place some CA glue in the wood hole before threading the brass insert in.

ridiculously cool that is...

Man, if I could figure out how to do that as an eagle my squadron (and the local place that brews our "raptor ale" which is in honor of our sqadron) would go gaga

The brass inserts are also available at Harbor Frieght in little plastic parts containers.
Haven't tried any so don't know if there any good.

Jim, I finally got this thing semi finished, made from 2" thick walnut carved on both sides, turned on the mini lathe finished off with my grizzly dremel, 1 coat linseed oil and I hope you can recognize it from the pic.

Yes Ken.

I posted the pattern in this thread:
