Question about 3/8" straight bit

Can i make cuts through the board with the 3/8 " straight bit? or do i have to use the 1/8" bit that cam with the machine only? the reason i am asking is my 1/8" bit broke and havn't been able to get one yet.

I make what are called "pockets" with the 3/8 bit, but not as a substitute for the 1/8 bit.
