16 bit ??

:confused: I have a question about the patterns, I have noticed that some of the patterns are listed with 16 bit. What does 16 bit mean ?? By the way brand new to Carvewright owner, I am sure you will be hearing allot of silly questions from me in the future...

:mrgreen:I saw this question and thought it was 16 bit pattern or 32 bit pattern.... Resolution of the pattern. Newer patterns are made with the editor software in the older 16 bit or the newer 32 bit....

It's like a computer.... Old 8 bit machines were replaced by 16 bit machines then 32 and 64.... Picture a 8 bit toll booth at a turnpike... 8 cars at a time.... A Computer word that is 16 bits long takes 2 passes to get through a 8 bit system....

Designers are always writing programs with bigger or longer words.. 32 bit words or instructions on a 16 bit system take 2 passes.... A older 32 bit word on a 64 bit system does 2 words at a time.....

I think that is the deal with Vista and running it as a older machine.... It has to do with 32 or 64 or ???? Machines.... I am a little lacking on the new stuff....

I learned this bit stuff when I was teaching computers in the Navy.

So someone that understands the Editor 16 bit / 32 bit stuff fill me in....

2nd EDIT: OK.... I read Jeff's explination..... Now I understand..... 16 bit gives you more choices of grayscale.... A 2 bit system would be Black or white... 16 bit gives you more shades.... Better Flexability...

And it is 8 bit and 16 bit..... Learning more every day... Ignore the Turnpike stuff..... Mumbling old man.... Starting to sound like the Professor in Back to the Future.... 1.21 Gigawatts...:mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen:.

Edit 3.... And a 8 bit word.... 1 2 4 8 16 32 64 128 Binary Bit weights 00000001 = 128 10100000 = 5 (1 +4)

A 16 bit word..... 1 2 4 8 16 64 128 256 512 1024 2048 4096 8192 16,384 32,768 65,536 Binary Bit Weights....
