Just installed installation disk. Created a simple pattern for first time use. Cannot save to memory card because when I plug reader into USB port, my PC does not detect new hardware. The memory card is inserted and the green light is on. Any help from you guys out there?

Most Computers don't see the Card as a drive and won't assign it a letter or number.
If the light goes on, the Pc knows its there.
Are you using the Upload Option from the Drop Down Menu?
Almost forgot --Welcome to the CW Forum

You will have access to the card through Designer only. Look in the file menu.
Edit: Welcome to the Forum..
Also: It is not a true "Memory Card" as you would typically think of it. It holds code that the CW/CC needs to run as well. It will also hold compiled designs, scanned data from the probe and error information. Because of all of this, access was restricted to Designer access only.

In Designer, go to 'File' then down to 'upload'. Designer will then start the process of uploading to the card.

The bit seems to be inserted correctly, but it won't turn when the machine starts carving, and the machine aborts the process. Any hints as to what I can do?

Sounds like the wires on the right cover switch may have come dissconnected. The right switch controls the cut motor. Make sure the wires are indeed connected to the switch and trace them back to the cut motor. I had them come apart on me once during shipment.

Yes welcome, could you go into a little more detail of what you are doing? From the start, you insert the card turn machine on go to projects select your project. Then ask if you want to stay under the rollers if you added the the 7" to your project then Yes if not then No. Then it goes through the measuring the width then length and and ask you to resize because most likely because you used whole numbers and lumber is not. So you tell it ok and it ask to center? Push ok then always asks if you want to cut the board to size No.
Then it asks for the bits you choose for the project, say the 1/16th ballnose. You load the bit in the QC it goes to check the bit by going all the way to the right and the bit plate comes out and the bit touches the plate. If this plate does not come out it will keep asking for the bit until it does find the bit. If not simply oil the spring under the bit plate. Oh another thing is the temp. in your shop if it is too cold the machine does not work well.
Ok lets say you made it through the bit finding then the machine will adjust the board to the starting point and the begin carving.
So please tell us what has happen that it doesn't start and what does the screen tell you.

Instructions coming with machine are not clear enough. I thought the flex shaft was like an auxiliary power unit for off-line carving (Dremel-style), so I just removed the inner shaft. When the brain kicked in, I realized that it provided the rotation for the bit. After replacing the shaft and connecting it to the head, the bit turned just fine.
Same with my earlier problem with uploading the file. Instructions are not clear.
Thanks for your post. I'm sending you a nickel (smile). Floyd.

Here is a link to the most updated manual... it probably supersedes the one that was shipped with your unit.

As always, if you are unclear on anything, please feel free to post your questions or concerns. There are lots of people on this forum that will go to extremes to help insure you are successful with your machine.

Lol Floyd I hate to say it but this isn't a learn as you go machine! I did that with my first one back in 06 and boy did I have problems! Of course I blamed the machine and returned a couple (well my first was a lemon and returned on the suggestion from a LHR tech!) So with the others instead of reading the instructions which I hate to read or more times then often read too fast and miss the whole subject! I continued to just use the machine! So I would break something have it repaired and until I learned by my mistakes and took some time to learn the machine I stop having so many issues!
I have 2 machines one CW I bought new and recently a reconditioned CC from Sears that was brand new because the last owner never even used it except the designer CD so makes me wonder why? Still for the last 2 years I have not sent any of may machines in for repair and because I took the time to learn I know what to do when simple things go wrong!
Most of the education I received came from this forum! You will find this is a great source and believe me it has been asked about whatever several times! So you can out right ask a question and you get your answer! Or when you have time search the forum and read about some simple problems that mostly you will see happened due to operator error.
Don't get me wrong all problems are not due to the operator, sensors are one of the biggest issues. Then sometimes you get a bad part (made in China)
Still take some time read the manual, play with the designer and learn some tricks. The machine will do everything you ask it to do. So if you did something in the designer and it comes out not the way you wanted it to. Chances are it was a design error.
I am not trying to scare you this little machine is great! I love the designer and how user friendly it is! I owned a full size 4' by 8' Shopbot I never finished putting together and ended up selling it. Why because I love this little machine and didn't want to take the time to learn a new software! I still have a smaller K2 CNC with a 14" by 25" and have owned it for 2 years. It has sat on my bench never used! I own a sign shop and I just love the CW!
I would suggest you read up on the roller use some members swear by it. Myself I hardly use it because it is a waste of lumber and I use reclaimed old growth redwood and I value every inch! Yes you can build a sled for this too.
Second read up on keeping the machine clean and looking into a dust collector system for it. There are a few designs out there fwharris sells one already made and Fredrick_P has a great free design.
Then I would read up on the cover sensor, you can find it on a search as Close cover error. Then another error message is the check cut motor.
You will also experience a Z axis stall that can be caused by many things from a clump of dust in your Y motor to a knot in the wood!
You are going to love and at times hate this machine! But to know about about it and the operation you will love it more then hate it!
I am always willing to help in design or problems to finishing a sign! If I can help I will and there are several other members in here that will too!

Ps I forgot about the "Rock" chuck! Do some research on it too and the ins and out of the QC. I have never had any problems with the QC myself and have a "Rock" on my CW and love it. I like the QC because of the adapters and when changing a bit the machine has no problem finding the bit. That isn't an issue with the "Rock" if you have a bit stop on the bit.
