I'm trying to make a desk name plaque and have a small pic of a church on the side. I'd like to get rid of the edges on the pic. Especially where the sky is supposed to be. Any ideas how?

Not sure this is what you mean.. but if you want to just tolwer the rest of the sruface so you dont have a "outline", just put a erctangle around the entire are and make it a carve reagion of the depth of you lowest spot on your background.

I have attached two sample mpc and two screen shots to help explain what I am saying.

edit: whoops.. i picked a bad image to use.. i just notice at the depth i picked.. i lost the bats!!! Just a minor mistake on my part.. but hopefully you can still understand the technique.

You may edit your picture as you Import it, or with Pattern Editor after the fact.
However, you need to know that any image that you wish to appear as raised must be in an area that is recessed. The key is how to accomplish that task and apply the other portions of your carve/design.

How do you intend to do your text? Raised or recessed? Raster or centerline?
If the text will, also, be raised then I presume everything will be a Raster carve. If this is true, then you will be using a sled or a wider board to allow the rollers to stay above the carver area, and your design will all appear raised.

I stumbled on this after scratching my head and the simplest way I've come up with so far is to lower the pattern during the "import image" process. Try using the down arrow and click it as opposed to pulling on the slider. You will notice all the background you want to remove ( basically all the white space left behind the image once you've removed the background ) will disappear from the preview screen - leaving you with just the church image.

I haven't tried this yet, but possible setting a transparency to the background of an imported PNG will make this automatic?

erasing the background in a pic editor like photoshop etc.

put a carve region around the majority of the board and adjust it till its the same depth as the background of the pic.

Placing a carve region on the entire work piece takes away the edges but that's not really what I'm looking for. Basically I'd like to know if there's a way to import a non rectangular image. I'd like to carve only the church and don't really have a preference if it's raised or recessed carving. I can take out the background in PS but will the software recognize the alpha channels or will if just fill it in to get a rectangular image.

Here are three AVI lessons that may give you some insight.

Thanks for all the help guys. Bud great tutorials. I'll definitely watching more vids. I found out the designer software does understand alpha channels so all I had to do was save the pic in an appropriate format.
