I tried searching the posts but couldn't find an answer. How would I make spherical like dowels seen here. I don't have a lathe so I was hoping to be able to do it on the CC.

Don't think they are actually dowels, I agree on the checking at craft stores. They look like they are actually a 'stringing bead' that has a hollow center but work great as a spacer because of the rounded outside. May have been mounted by inserting a dowel that would fit the ID and a hole drilled into each 'layer' or by whatever the imagination of the creator could come up with.

Do they make them in various species? I'd like to stain the project so I need the wood species to match.

Now that is something I never thought of making.... The sample looks like Philippine Mahogany.... Saw many like it in my West Pac years as a Squid.... Even saw a Street vendor cutting one in a shop in Subic.

All the base Exchanges and PX's carried them too...

Leave it to KEN, my Hero, to whip up some 3D artwork to be able to use the CW to make the component.

Most of the ones in the PI that I saw were barrel shaped not flat.... Very Popular on desks of Fleet Sailors and Marines...

You could make them with a Plunge Point Round over bit. I use these types on my Legacy Mill. You need Plunge bits for the CW machine.

I only used CW Designer to get that far,
it's really all in there -- if ya dig for it.

Here are a couple of patterns - 3/8 dowel with a 1" sphere, and a 1.4" sphere.

I drew them in a CAD program and used the STL importer to bring them in so they should be pretty accurate as far as roundness goes but you may have to sand the midpoint where the two sides meet a little bit.

Hope this helps!

Very nice!! I think i'm gonna take this and see what a "beaded" frame would look like... much like the rope pattern that was posted a long time ago.

Thanks a bunch!
