Does anyone know of a third party vendor for the 1/8" cutting bit. I just ordered one from LHR but they are expensive and I don't really need the adaptor. since I learned how to properly install the adaptor in the QC I no longer get the dimples. In a year and 3/4 I nave never broken a bit. Now 2 in the same day. I was trying the old hot glue a piece on the end trick. Worked great for the carving, but broke 2 cutting parts for a log cabin box I changed to 2 passes, and from now on I will only use that trick on carve only projects. I don't know what the difference was; the board was solid. If Precise bits only has the carving bit (that I can find) and Sears had a clearance sale on them a while back and I stocked up.
Thanks
Clint

LG,
I am not really complaining about price of the bit, but I don't need to pay for another collar and LHR's shipping I find a bit steep. I have always had good service from LHR.
Doug,
I went to their web site and e-mailed them. If I hear anything positive I will post it. Thanks for the link.

Yeah 18.00 shipping for a router bit is ridiculous. It cost me about 3.00 to send that bit. I know I UPS all day.

That being said the CarveWright bits are better than anything I have found yet even better than the Onsrud I paid almost double for.

Just order as much as you can each time. I have also found that if I use the web site I get charged 18.00 shipping, if I call it in it was like 11.00, still expensive, but better. I have not found any bits that work for me as well as the Bits right from CarveWright, the bits they have just work with their machine.

I wish CarveWright sold that 1/8" and 1/16" cutting bit in the down cut style.

I find that a new bit from LHR and a new bit from Ron, or the one I got, used in the same type wood I leally could not see a difference.

I could be wrong and may be it was not the bit but some other reason. I just did not see the difference. Both bits cut the same as I could see.

The bit from LHR did last longer but that could have been because of something I could not see.

The bit from Ron discollered after three 8 hr. carvings.

I think both bits are for the most part quality bits. I just don't understand what my problem was with the one from Ron. There has to be a reason.

cestout,

I think that you would find the use of rails on the top and bottom of your project to be stronger and reduce the chance of breaking bits, it also gives the brass roller a continuous surface to roll on.

Can you elaborate on the use of rails?

Doug,

That was partially covered in the Tips and Tricks and added to by ChrisAlb and others who made "frames".

Lets say that your material is the same size as the project and is 5.5" X 12" X 3/4" thick.
Attach two pieces of 3/4" square material 19" - 20" to the top and bottom of a piece of 1" X 6" (really 5.5" X 3/4") that is 12"+ long (centered) with glue/tape/nails/screws, and put tape across the ends for the sensors OR fill the ends with wood (at least 1" wide).
Center the carving in the object that the machine "sees".

The rails stay under the rollers and support the short board keeping it from tipping, and offer a smooth surface for the brass roller. And, are reusable!

I always buy bits from Ron Justice. Shipping is decent and you can add more bits and I dont think the shipping changes. Plus the price of his bits are very resonable and I believe they 4 fluted. Matter of fact that is all I carve with and I think that I need to order more. But Ron will definitely give you a quote.

Sorry I am late getting back here, been busy. I got a reply from mcmaster.com right away, and the don't have it. Do the bits from Amazon and Northern have the collar. I don't need it, but that is about the LHR price with collar, but shipping is much extra.
Ken
I suppose your rails trick could easily be used in conjunction with the hot glue a piece on each end trick. You would have to rip the rails off then cut the end pieces off, but all could be reused.

I will have to check all this stuff out - thanks a bunch.
