View Full Version : Inputting a pattern into a carve region

I am trying to get a pattern to invert into a carve region. I am trying to make a mold. I lay out my oval and get it set at .25 deep. I am trying to get to .06 of the bottom with the pattern. I put in my image and set it at .65 and there are raised edges within the carve region. I have tried to do merges and clips to leave only the part that is below the depth of the carve region and am having no success. Can anyone give me some pointers? I am attaching the madonna pattern for a reference of what I am trying to do. When you invert the ptn of the madonna, it leaves the edges.

Thanks

Tacis,

I do not recall what i did other than messing with Additive/Subtractive to get this.
Is this what you wanted?

Try this,
On the Madonna,
Remove the INVERT.
Change your Depth to (.250).
Set you Height to 100.
Set the MERGE to (-).
See if that get you close to what you want.
AskBud

NOTE: I think Doc & I did the same process. The KEY was to turn off the INVERT.

Hi guys,

While I was looking at your .mpc files, I noticed an illusion I’ve seen while working with Art several times before.
In Designer, if you zoom-in and center the figures and slowly rock it from right to left or up and down,
their heads appear to trun or rise and lower to follow you.
It’s an illusion common with recessed cavity molds or castings.

It can be a little unnerving if you catch it out of corner of your eye,
or when you’re not expecting it.

must be an optical conclusion

I must be having brain farts, but is this what you were trying to do?

Ike

Ugh this internet here is BAD! It takes several attempts to send anything

Thanks for the response. I an trying to invert the pattern. It is not this same pattern but has similar features. I am trying to make a mold to pour plaster into. If everything would invert, it would be great but you still get edges.

Ike,

I would like to whole pattern inverted. When I try to invert the image, there is still a raised edge. When I try to do a merge, it still does not disappear.

Ken.

Thanks. Is it possible to invert the madonna? I have tried adjusting the depth and doing merge additive and subtractive and still can not get the recessed image I am trying to get.

Tacic,

The mpc that I (and Bud I think) was dished out to create a negative mold.
If that Maddona was inverted, the casting would be negative.

Open and enlarge the mpc that I posted and tilt it.

Hi Tacis,

This is the way I've made cavity Molds in the past,
to get a proper reproduction.

The Figure will need to be made Subtractive (-)
Flip the Figure from right to left (<->)
Invert the Figure (I)

Ken - That's neat, but it's getting thin, close to a bald spot.

Hey bjb,

That's an easy one to solve ---- 1" project Board.

Ken,

Thank you. this is what I am looking for. I am wondering what I am doing wrong that I can not do it. When I invert the pattern to make it a negative mold, I get this edge that is around the outline of the image.

Bjb,

I had an accident that turned out to be a great discovery. I did a project and went within .05 of the bottom of the board. The result was amazing when held to the light. It was like a wooden lithopane. I am going to try an image that sets in from of a candle holder and see what the results are. I will post with images when I complete.

Tacis,

I think I see part of your problem,
Try changing your Madonna height from 300 to 100
