Thanks Everyone,

The way I see it we've only scratched the surface of what these little

Thought while I was fooling around with Décor Carvings and Colors, --- I’d try a few of these.
The Wooden Balls are available at the Woodcraft Store, Rocklers and most Craft Stores.
Then use your CW Designer and a little imagination to carve a few different styles of Bases for them.
I use powered aniline dyes with alcohol to add the colors the wooden ball
before I finish them with a few coates of Clear Gloss Lacquer.

Made up some Photos as Samples

Ps. Can't afford a Crystal ball for one , -- but it would be neat

Find me a way to carve the continents into one of those and I'll love it!

Since you mentioned the balls - this is something I am planning on making using the 2" wooden cubes instead of spheres...

Make a sled to hold 9 of those cubes firmly, then carve a pattern. Rotate all cubes and carve another pattern. Repeat until you have all 6 sides carved. Instant puzzle! I have seen these painted and with photos glued to them, I think carving would be a nice option.

Hi hilda,

Those are 3" and 4" Maple Wooden Balls that I can buy unfinished locally,
$2.29 and $7.99. I've seen them in Birch, Maple, Pine, and Oak at a few web sites online.
I found at least for me it was cheaper to buy them than to make them.
But I'm sure someone has probably already figured how to make them in layers in designer,
and just glued the the layers together.

Bud, Thanks for the Site info

I do use the Salad Bowl Finish, it's non-toxic of course and rubs in well on nearly any wood I use,
plus it really makes the colors of the wood grain jumpout at you.
You can use it to re-treat the bowls or dishes as needed without worry about it building up.

Salad oil finish ?

Most of the time I lightly stain the project first,
then rub in the oil to deepen the color a little.
The Big Box Stores near you like Home Depot or Lowe's should have it,
if not, they do carry Butcher Block Oil which works fine.

Salad oil can get rancid. You are supposed to use mineral oil no cutting boards and salad bowls.

General Finishes' Salad Bowl Finish is non-toxic and food safe when dry.
It works well for wooden bowls, plates, cutting boards, eating utensils,
and other wood surfaces that come in contact with food.
It is also highly resistant to water and food stains.
Salad Bowl Finish is applied with a clean soft cloth.

Salad Bowl Finish not Salad Oil Finish

GrammaPam
10-06-2009, 01:43 PM
If any newbie's noticed it there is a difference between "salad oil" being used and "salad bowl oil finish." From what I can learn mineral oil and bees wax are some of the ingredients in "salad bowl finish." I had been researching the best cutting board finish, so this is just what I needed to understand.
Thanks

Hi Richard,

I had been doing several carving in Red and White Oak, a few of them had to be 1" thick, so I went to buy some 1" x 10" x 8Ft. Oak stair tread stock.
I told the guy at the lumber yard that I was going to cut them down to 18" and 24" lengths to carve in my machine.
He told me they had 2 or 3 pallets of 2 and 3 ft. Oak cut-offs, that they sell a couple bucks a foot.
In about 15 minutes I had half my van full or Oak cut-offs-- when he said, they also had cut-offs of 5/4" Maple, Poplar, Select Pine, and a few others for the same price.
It only took me about another 15 minutes to fill up the rest of my van.
Soooo ---- I've been carving lots of 5/4=1" projects off and on for the last year and a half now.

Check a few local Lumber yards around you to see what they do with their out-offs.

Ps. The Walnut and Cherry cut-offs I got were a $1.00 more a foot.

As a matter of fact I did buy some 4x4x3 ft Cedar fence post cut-offs from that lumber yard.
I cut them into 18" lengths and squared them at 3 1/2" x 3 1/2'' and will run them through my machine as a double 2 sided carving.
I'll put a 1 1/4" Eye Screw in the top to hang them in your Maple trees, the Holes and Grooves cut into all 4 sides will be stuffed
with suet, Peanut butter, seeds and raisens.

Run it the first time, it will carves the front and back, roll it 90 Degrees and just carve it again. ---a 4 Sided Carving

I might be able to find some red oak cut-offs but that would be about all. It relly sucks not being able to get the good woods anywhere local. So long as we're on the Chief, here's one I haven't carved yet. Two sided carve, it's set up on a board 1.5" thick, so can't perform cutouts - I set them all at .70 each side, there will be a tad to cut away with an exacto knife.

Often I just rotate everything 90 Degree to run with the grain,
other times I joint 2 or 3 boards together as needed.
Once I make up a pattern to the size I want, I seldom reduce them.

ok... I selected everything, grouped it, then reduced it fine. Then I go to edit to change the board size to 12x12x.750, it messes up the whole .mpc. Sorry, I guess I don't quite understand. I know it's been reduced OK, but I just want to be able to load it to my card and not get a "error" cause I don't have the right size board. Thanks for your patience with my questions...

Gean,
Probably one of the more experienced can clear up your problem but my impression is the only thing the 'rotate' works on is patterns, not lines, arcs, etc. Since the only part that is a pattern is the Indian then it is all you can rotate, you'll have to draw the other parts yourself. Hope the pros can give you an answer that makes it easier.
Rick H.
ps, see that while I was slowly typing another answer was given, good luck.

The board is 12" X 12". Couldn't you simply rotate to board 90 degree's in the machine?

want2b
10-18-2009, 07:27 PM
Rotating is a solution, just need to add 3.5" on both sides to allow the carver the 7" needed. Could easily be done by placing all on a piece of 1/4" luan with double sided tape to hold in place.

This is a Project I’ve wanted to try for some time now,
Thought I’d give it a try in CW Designer as a two sided carving today.
All 6 tiles are carved from one piece of wood, the lattice mounted behind them,
Are for support and to make the tiles stand out from the wall,
can be cut on your Carver or a table Saw.
I would do the 3/8” X 1” interlocking slots in them with my Carver from one board
then glue and assemble lattice before adding the wooden tiles.

You can carve nearly any pattern or use any Text you might want.

Here a Screen Shots of what it could look like.

They have both had Chinese carry-out at home a few times before and really like it,
But this was their first introduction to Chopsticks, --- after several tries and lots coaching
The concept of eating Won-ton soup with chopsticks continued to elude the 3 yr old,
I have to admit, I ain’t no pro at it myself --- what a mess we had, along with loads of fun and lots of laughs.

Bait Dish Re-Do,

I just re-did the Sushi Dish Set in Designer Ver. 1.171,
I think It looks pretty much like the old mpc file.
I open and closed it several time to make sure -- it would,
Give it a try and feel free to modify it to suit your needs.

Thanks Eveyone, for the words of encouragement,
I really do enjoy sharing ideas and projects when ever I can.

Ps. -- Last night we took our 2 youngest Grand Kids (3 and 4) with us to a Chinese Restaurant,
They have both had Chinese carry-out at home a few times before and really like it,
But this was their first introduction to Chopsticks, --- after several tries and lots coaching
The concept of eating Won-ton soup with chopsticks continued to elude the 3 yr old,
I have to admit, I ain’t no pro at it myself --- what a mess we had, along with loads of fun and lots of laughs.
Even the waitresses that kept supplying us with extra napkins, pitched in with tips and words encouragement.

Drew this Combo up today, -- maybe a little more manageable for the little Guys ------ Me too.

Hey Ken,
This Chopstick Spoon .mpc is the one that kills my design program every time I try to open it. All the other ones work fine, but for some reason this one just shuts everything down for me.

Hi Jerry,

That's the second Old Mpc file this week that won't open with the newer Designer Versions,
I just tried it with Ver. 1.171 twice --- But No go!
I'm afraid we my find more files are going to be gone, maybe for good,
I lost a ton of my mpc and ptn files when my main Back-up Drive went south last month.

Jerry,

I'll try to write a little something up on what I use and how I stack them together.

I the mean time,
Here's one similar to the Olive Oil Dip Servers Barb and I use.

A few types of Cold-Cuts, some Cubed Cheeses, Half a Loaf of French or Italian Bread,
a little Fruit, plus 3 or 4 Seasonings and Olive Oil make a Great Lunch or Late Evening Snack

Ps. The Garlic and Onion is Great

Scottish Short Bread Plate -- Hope this Helps a Little,

This is pretty much how I do lot of my projects; I opened and saved “Itsmeagain’s “ Octagon Drawing , with a free copy of (Paint.Net).
I also used it to remove any Background colors and Text; made a single color, and then I imported it into CW Designer.
I out-lined, cut it out and saved as a Ptn Pattern, I opened the pattern in CW Pattern Editor and used the Blur filter on it a couple of times, and the Trim Edge filter once.
I then open the New Octagon Pattern on my Project Board and added a couple of patterns from my Pattern to pull-down menu to add to the Project --- lined them up,
set the Heights and Depths, and that’s about it.

Thanks for Asking

Thanks GrammaPam and Lawrence, I have a friend that does a lot of wood burning and ingraving for Craft Shows, he saw some of the carvings and pictures I have and asked me if I make a few for him to hand wood burn like the Cat’s face. I’ve never had a Tattoo myself but he tells me a lot of folk like the Tribal Patterns as Art for collecting or just decorating. There are tons of free patterns on the web to play around with, I do have the DFX software form CW, but haven’t opened it yet -- the Old gray matter is still pretty cloudy and I will have to wait till the weather clears a little, if ya know what I mean.

Hi Ken,

I've had a little spare time recently to go back and read through some of these threads and I finally realized that you created and shared what is one of my all time favorite MPCs. It has been the most requested project I carve for friends and family and now I can correctly give you credit for the handsome design. Speaks to the Scottish roots on both sides of our family. Thank you for all the wonderful designs you've created and shared and particularly for this dish. I'm in your debt Sir.

Great sign Ken,

Thanks for sharing it. John Donne would be Rolling On The Floor Laughing (ROFL)

For Whom the Bell Tolls

No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manner of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

John Donne.

If you contact eBay to let them know that these folks are sharing your patterns without your permission this is the response that you get.

Thanks for letting us know there are listings on eBay that you think violate your intellectual property (IP) rights.

To request the removal of listings that violate intellectual property rights, you'll need to participate in our Verified Rights Owner (VeRO) Program. To join the VeRO Program, please fill out a Notice of Claimed Infringement (NOCI) form for the listings you reported in your previous email.

Sign it and fax it back to us at: 408 516-8811

You can find the form here:http://pages.ebay.com/help/community/NOCI1.pdf

-- Note --To view and print the NOCI, you need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. If you don't already have this program, you can download Acrobat Reader for free from Adobe's website: http://get.adobe.com/reader (http://get.adobe.com/reader)/

Please include item numbers, details of the intellectual property rights that they infringe, and provide contact information for yourself or your company. Please also include any documents or additional information that can support your claim (for example, a trademark number or patent number).

Here are some of the benefits of the VeRO Program:

-- You'll have direct access to our VeRO Customer Support team.
-- You can report any listings that infringe your IP rights and ask us to remove them.
-- You can create an eBay "About Me" page with information about your infringement policies. When we remove a listing at your request, we'll include a link to your page in the email we send the seller.
-- You can request personal information about members who infringe your IP rights. To receive this information, you need to sign a Personal Information Agreement.

You only need to fax your first NOCI so we get all of your details. Once you join the VeRO Program, we'll send you more information about how you can report listings more quickly.

I hope I've explained everything clearly. We look forward to hearing back from you.

Sincerely,
John H.

Ropdoc, why do you think so many of the pattern makers do not post here anymore. If posted here some A-H takes them and turns a profit from your work on ebay. They can not create a pattern if they wanted to so they take others work to profit from. The forum members suffer for their actions.

Maybe one should buy the CD then give the seller a bad feedback. I think if they get below 80% there may be some restrictions of may be totally banned from selling.

Bad feedback does not restrict from selling but cuts down on discounts sellers get for good feedback. Would be a waste of money to buy the cd just for that reason.
