Now that a good number of us have switched to a rock chuck, I was wondering if anyone who has the entire carvewright bit set wants to share where they set the collars on there bits for use with the rock.

I've decided to go with the locking 1/4 & 1/2 collars (the ones with set screws) mentioned in another post. I just thought it would be a good idea to come up with a 'standard' measurment for all the 'standard' bits. I was thinking of a measurement from the tip of the bit to the top of the collar. I assume the collar touches the sleeve... so maybe tip of bit to sleeve amkes more sense since not every one is using the same collar.

Anyone want to share thier measurments? Is this eve a good idea or just a waste of time?

I set them short so the flat spot never gets near the holding pin.

Thanks for the quick reply. Do you have a digital caliper that you could post the measurement from the bit tip to the top of the collar?

The measurement doesn't matter, only that it stays the same from the first check to the second check during a multiple bit carve.

Don't know if this will help - they are called "Wheel Collars" in the Radio Control industry. Here's a website with a variety of sizes available:

I finally found them... http://www.woodcraft.com/Family/2008158/2008158.aspx

This is where I got them from.

There is a flat spot in some bits. The ROCK uses a milled bolt to pinch or hold the bit in place. If you install the bit with the flat spot in the milled bolt area it will possibly let the bit drop out....

The way I placed my locking collar when I place the bit in the rock chuck, I can spin it 360 degrees and the flat spot in higher in the chuck and will never cause a problem locking down the bit.

Some other places too.

Thanks Al. And thank you to all who gave me great places to look and choose from.
And of course THANK YOU Ron for the best addition to the CW I have ever seen. The Rock Chuck rocks! I must say, though I don't agree with the naming of it. I think it needs to be called the Rock Chuck because it gives Rock Solid Carves. Hey LHR, get a clue and get rid of that piece of junk and at least offer the Rock Chuck as an option. Just my humble opinion.
