I know several people have been doing stuff with the STL importer, but I haven't seen many peoples results yet. Post them up, I'm dying to see what others are doing! Other than my starship, here's something fun I played with.

I know for me, the reason i didnt purchase the STL importer is because of the lack of STL websites..shure theres alot of ones out there but for free stuff or a min amount of $ theres not... unless im looking in the wrong spot

No need to find a strictly STL website. Searching for just STL's will definitely be difficult. An STL can be made from any 3D file. Think of STL as the jpeg of the 3D world. It is a universal format that any 3D program can export to and they can all read it. Just search for 3D file sites and then convert the files. There are tons of 3D sites out there.
http://www.3dxtras.com/
http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/
http://www.3dm3.com/modelsbank/
http://www.trekmeshes.ch/
These are just a few. Google searches for 3d meshes or 3d models will reveal many more.

Also, FREE 3D software for converting and or creating are available too.
http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/
http://www.blender.org/
http://sketchup.google.com/

I don't own any other 3D programs or have any other resources other than what I've found for FREE in my searches online.

It's carved in poplar. I need to flip everything and make a pair! It was just a silly model I found to test things, but it sure came out neat. It's fun to set it on a table or something around people. It causes quite a bit of confusion.

So anybody have anything they've done yet? Am I the only one having a blast with this stuff? This is the most fun I've ever had with my machine!

Joe,

I don't have the software but I'm interested to see what some of the others that do come up with. There is no limits to what you can make. Let your imagination run wild.

I was having a lot of trouble getting models into the bitmap form but now the only issue i have is my lack of skills on the 3d program :)

Anyone else using Rhino? I'm trying to slice up a Strat neck and am ending up having problems with the inside of the neck being hollow after i slice it...

LiquidGuitar - how did you do your Les Paul neck? I tried doing it in 3 pieces with a scarf joint for the headstock but now i'm having second thoughts and am thinking of doing it like Benedetto does with 3 full length slices the of flatsawn maple plus the 2 ears for the headstock.

If the inside of your mesh is hollow after slicing in the STL importer, it is probably because the mesh is made of separate parts. It needs to be a single, closed mesh. If the slice crosses a break in the mesh, the importer seems to have trouble capping it. You may need to "weld" the meshes together.

I am cutting the neck down the center into 4 pieces then flipping the parts 90..

a lot quicker now with the new STL program.

yeah, it's amazing how much faster things are. I spent days trying to get the conversion right for the bump maps. With the STL it only took a couple of minutes. They ought to think about including the software with the machine since it will probably sell a lot more machines.

Ok, I promised a few days ago I'd show the rest of my tank build. Well here it is with a fresh coat of primer! Turret swivels and everything. It doesn't roll though, gonna have to try that next time. I do still have painting to do, but it's basically done. Gotta go get some army green paint now.
