View Full Version : 32" Starship model

I wanted to show off my first fabricated model with the STL importer. This is the Starship Voyager it's 32" long and made up of about 14 slices. I found the 3D model here http://www.trekmeshes.ch/ (Model made by Sarod, want to give credit where it's due) It's a really nice 3d mesh. I still have a long way to go, but so far I couldn't be more thrilled.

now THAT'S what I'm talking about!
absolutely the single best reason to have this machine and this application! How cool is it that you can carve up your own starship?

Simply awesome job, man.

How many hours carve time?

Hey,
if it wouldn't be too much trouble...it would also help those of us working on our own 3d stuff if you could throw us a quick explanation of your strategy for slicing this one. I'm working on a d7 klingon battlecruiser now and tips would be really appreciated!

Yeah, I'll work on a screen capture video to show how I did it. It actually wasn't too hard. I did use that healing feature alot. This software is amazing. Once I figured it out, I realized I can slice anything.

I've been working more on the model and have realized I used the wrong foam. I used a 2lb polyiso foam which was cheap, but I will definitely use something more dense next time. It's a little to porous so I'm having to fill it with spackling and putty. I was hoping primer would fill in th texture, but it hasn't been perfect. Rubbing in the putty seems to work pretty well. The details are truly amazing! I got it glued together into 2 main sections using contact cement and started priming and filling. Here's a couple more pics. Calling it a night. More tomorrow. This is the most fun I've had with this machine!

Very cool, what did you carve it out of

joesighting

I actually tried 3 different foams. Expanded Poly Styrene (white foam), Extruded Poly Styrene (pink foam), and a 2lb dense PolyisoCyanurate (polyiso foam). The white foam was a disaster. Cratered my machine bad. I had to get in there with dental picks to get the foam out of the gear teeth. The pink foam was terribly rough. It just seemed to tear. The polyiso foam carved great, but it's a bit soft. It was only $20 for a 4'x8' so very budget friendly for my experiments. The project ended up on six 37"x14.5" boards carving at about 2.5 hrs a piece. Took me a while to carve them all, but that foam didn't even slow down the machine. I vacuumed it out in between carves, that's it. The foam is too soft though, next time I'll go with something denser. It's just too delicate. It's making it hard to work with.

May take a while.

I've been working away on my Starship. Once I got the filling and sanding done, I assembled the 2 halves and filled and primed those seams. The result was amazing. A complete starship voyager. Now its on to painting!

Looking really great all primed and glued.
What are you using to join the foam pieces? Epoxy or some kind of 3M spray?

Chief38

Still working on getting the poser version of 7 of nine so I can send it to hexagon to make an stl. Found face morph, and uniform but not the cyborg eyepiece.

joesighting
07-15-2009, 02:02 PM
I used 3M supper 77 and 90 as well as some contact cement that I brushed on. Depended on the size of the piece. I also used CA glue on the seams. Kinda wicked it in with a razor blade to get the seams as tight as possible. The I used the primer and spackle to fill and erase the seams.

I experimented with all kinds of stuff with this. I've got a buddy who used to be a prop and set man for a movie studio. He brought over all kinds of goodies to play with. We tried gel coats, styrospray coats, fiber glass resin, and some epoxy finishes. All of them had about the same result. They didn't level out well enough to get rid of the foam texture, and they weren't as workable as primer. Plus they are expensive if you don't have a friend with 5 gallon buckets of the stuff. In the end just plain old off the shelf stuff worked the best. Now if I could just find a good off the shelf source for the higher density foam I'd be set.

I spent all night just on the top of the saucer section. Defining the panels and windows. This is still in a pretty rough state, but it's starting to look so cool I couldn't wait to show it. I'm just using acrylic paints right now.

Sorry I've been away for a few days. James, the foam I got was from a local insulation supplier. It was yellow and dusty with no foil on it. I googled foam and called every place in town that sold any kind of foam to see what I could get. I would think it could be found somewhere near you. Sign shops usually have the higher density HDU foam, but it's so expensive. I'm hoping a really inexpensive solution presents itself soon. I'm about ready to start my next project! One thing I might try is PVC board. I've seen some work done on it that seemed to carve well. Plus it's nice and rigid. I could cut pockets out of it easier for insetting lights or motors or whatever I wanted to add to the models. I'm thinking about remote controlled submarines, boats, tanks, cars, planes, anything.

Here is some more progress on my finishing of the Starship.

Look at you and your cool display stand. That rocks. MDF?

I thought maybe you were going to get all fancy and slice a segment on the bottom of the 3D model and invert it to get the negative of the ship to use as the carriage...but this is cool. I like the badge..

I saw this thread posted on the rpf a LONG time ago and I'm so glad I found it again!! That starship project is really inspirational. It's one of the only examples I've seen of anyone using a CW to mill out sci fi models. I'd LOVE to see photos of your slices. I imagine you sliced horizontally through the ship, correct? Because you only get 3/4" max depth on each slice?

I plan on getting a CW shortly to do the same kind of application.
