Hi,

My first machine died like that 1 hour of carving time. I exchanged it at Sears for a new one.
I hooked a shop Vac to the muffler, bad idea, I might have killed it with static discharge.

That's a possibility alright. In any case, Welcome to the Forum and I wish you all the best!

The muffler exhaust is just half suction near the electronics and half through the cut motor, no chips or dust collection. Most likely the vacuum did not kill the machine, but cheap vacuums with plastic hoses make static electricity when chips flow thought them and that can kill a machine.

Read the Tips and Tricks as it has a bunch of things to help you understand the machine.
