I am looking for lowcost or free heightmap manipulation software and wonder if Wilbur software at Ridgecrest.ca.com software is a practical option for use with CW. (I do have PE) It is meant for terrain map manipulation and has some amazing ability for that, but It seems to me it could work with any heightmap. (Specifically want to shape guitar tops.) Liquid Guitars: I hope you will notice and comment.)
I did a search and found no discussion on this forum. Any experience or comments on this software, or other options, would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ken

Thanks JPLUCK. Yes, I have been studying Blender this afternoon also. It seems to be more complete and more powerful than Wilbur, I see why it is popular. Guess I'll have to dig in and get command of it.
Thanks again for the advice,
Ken

Ken,
If and when you figure out Blender, I am sure I am not alone in wishing that you would post your results and give us a few pointers.
Thanks
Also, check out blendernewbies.com for some good information and a CD that you can purchase with good tutorials.

I thank you all for input on this subject. I have been trying different programs. I have not heard of some of then. I was just thinking of posting a question regarding other programs to help.

Miragese:
Have you found other heightmap software not mentioned here? Please list it.
I seems LHR is coming out with some kind of .stl editor later, but I don't know much about it yet.
Thanks,
And Steven, judging from Blender tutorials it will be awhile before I can show anybody anything about Blender.

Before I jump into learning Blender, can anyone explain how to create a heightmap from a blender model?

I have used it for photo enhancements - it works, but not true gray scale for the heights - if it's black (-z) or white (top board) - it reads the photo. You need to use a Photo shop type programs to use it to make things you look right. Lots of work to make it look right, but it can be done – lots of dodge and paste, maybe some magic wand in the right places.

You just mentioned it!!;)
You are only the second person I know of to use it. I don't think it is in the possession of too many people. Kind of expensive too!!!

That may be the case but the real question is ? What is the differance between blender and Solidworks and the next question is if one can import Blender file into disigner why can't we import Solidworks files?

I don't know that much about Sloid Works to answer that question,
Who says you can't import Solid Works files???

You need to purchase Importer to import any of the solidworks stl files. I can't find any file extensions that designer will expect from solidworks

Your right, I have a friend who wants AutoCAD because Solid works won't save or export as a .bmp. There is no file that will work?? Not even copy and paste?
