Sounds a lot like the layered, and glued up projects
we did back in January of 2008

Looks like we're in for some more fun!!

STL is one of many CNC formats, we've been asking for it since 2006

Can't wait

Ken what is a STL?

Basically and STL file format is a mapping of the whole surface of a 3D model with Triangles. Like if you had a model of a cup in your favorite CAD program and exported an STL file from it. If you brought that STL file into a viewer you would see that the hole surface of the cup would be broken up into hundreds to thousands of little triangles. The finer the the resolution of you export the more triangles there would be and the smoother the surface would be. We use STL files daily in creating patterns on our 3D Systems Stereolithography machine (3D Systems invented the STL file format). I am excited in seeing this capability finally added to the software.

Hope this helps some.

I'll be able to mill out small dinosaur bones with this machine -great. Its an inexpensive alternate to using a 3-D printer. We've got a small dinosaur skeleton missing some parts that we're currently modeling in one of the 3-D programs.
I can hardly wait for the release. It would also be helpful if the workpiece could be rotated on a fixed axis (like the wood car racers in the edu. section) to accomodate areas that would be undercuts in different orientations.8)

Ken,
How did you slice up that image, what program are you using to achieve this?

Thanks,
James R

Hey James,

We didn’t have any STL Software at the time, and Limited computer knowledge,
so I made plaster models and sliced them up to scan them with our CW Scanning Probe,
and saved them as ptn pattern files and png Photos.
It was all pretty primitive, but it got the job done. We carved them in Hard Maple,
glued them up and finished the completed project with several coats of Clear Lacquer.
The client was quite happy with the results.

The subject has popped up a few time on the CW Forum over the last couple of years.

Ok, for some reason the Newsletters have not been coming to me for a couple of months, so I have re-applied. How do I get a past copy? Looking at the website at, http://www.carvewright.com/cms/newsletter, does not help.
Thanks.:)

It might already be in the latest release and all you need is a unlock code after paying.

I am so excited about the news from LHR, being able to import and slice/carve stl files, that I can hardly contain myself. This is like waiting for Christmas as a kid.

I will now be able to carve most of the 3D Models/objects I have been creating in TurboCad.

Here ya Go,

New Product Preview
Our goal at LHR is to be "always innovating".
We spend a great amount of time and effort developing and testing our products to prepare them for our customers.
It's generally not our policy to talk about these new products before they are ready, but this time we couldn't wait to show you.
The CarveWright STL importer allows full 3D models to be imported and sliced into sections.
These sections can then be carved with the machine and then reassembled into a full 3D model.
This sculpture is made of 14 slices carved and then glued together to create this 12" tall 360º bust!
The model building and prototyping possibilities with this are endless!

The STL importer is just one of the new products scheduled for release this summer.
Expect to see more about this in the coming weeks as we lead up to it's release in June.

Allowing STL imports opens up a whole new world of possibilities, I so thrilled about this news I can hardly contain myself. One of those possibilities is a new world of preexisting 3D models. I have found that most of the patterns currently available for the CarveWright are, well, pretty lame and flat.

The details are short on what it means when they say STL imports are coming (I don't know how one could carve a true 3D model on a 3 axis machine) BUT check out some of the amazing STL models that are available.

Check these out and if you want to see more I found some fantastic 3D models at www.3dmodelclub.com.

It's almost the middle of June and still no sign of the promised STL importer from CarveWright.

I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas.

How much longer?:)
