editor crashes with magic wand

Hopefully someone will be able to help with this. When I'm editing a pattern and i use the magic wand to make a selection if I try to cut the selection the program crashes but with any other tools it does fine. Like i said any help with this would be great.

This happens randomly. It seems to be more often when i select the outside of a pattern and have the wand tolerance set so that it grabs the very outer edge of the pattern. I do this to smooth the outside edge of a pattern before saving it. It happens when grabbing other areas but seems to crash 100% of the time when used for the outside edge.
