Piant for carved letters

Hi, I am donating quilt hangers for 13 Fallen Heroes from Louisiana.
I have their names, rank and military affiliation carved and would like to have the lettering be black.
I tried this technique: Sprayed lacquer a few coats and then sprayed black latex after the lacquer dried. Wiped off excess and let dry. Then sanded to remove left over paint smears. I still get some slight bleeding outside the letters that is visible up close and with some letters even more. I still have some time before I send these units to Louisiana for a ceremony. Does anyone know if their is a certain paint that won't bleed or a technique I could use. Thanks, Tom

I am also in contact with quilt guilds across the country to find out how many are needed. Then I will probably need some help when those are required.

I think AL and ChrisAlb (maybe some others, too) have some good techniques they have shared here before. Can't find their posts, but maybe they'll chime in when they notice your posting.

i think your bleed over problem is because when you carve letters in wood you always end up with end grain which will suck up more of the lacquer that your using to seal the board. i do this process all the time but i make sure the letters are coated in the carved areas to seal them up. usually one coat of laquer on the board is enough but the letters might need two or three heavier coats.

I am with Kendall. Extra coating of lacquer in the letter areas to seal up the end grains.

would sanding sealer help with the bleed?

Also, as a vet of a couple of tours to Iraq, let me know if you need any help making anything.

anything to seal up the end grain in the letters would work

if you have some old sanding sealer or even some varnish it doesnt really matter what you use you just have to put enough on to seal it to keep from having bleed through. if you use spray paint to do the letters it has the tendacy to bleed a little some than a brush painted enamel
