I carved a piece of orange osage and the motor on the x drive failed. The top of the board is about 1/8 th inch off from flat. Could that have caused the failure? I was thinking as the high part of the board entered the rollers, the pressure would increase and perhaps cause some problems.

Bingo you hit the nail on the head. Yes the board needs to be the same thickness all the way across, unless you use a sled and wedge the bottom of the narrow side up so that it is parallel all the way across the board. If ya don't ya gonna have problems. Sorry to hear about the X drive failure.
