Cutting MoP

I think officially you aren't supposed to cut Mother Of Pearl and Abalone but if I have pieces about 1 to 2mm thick and can secure them properly is it safe to cut these materials with the carvewright?

Has anyone done this? Any tips or tricks if you have?

Isn't MoP and abalone flakey? If so, it'll be a mess.

I had asked earlier about carving stag (antlers) and the consensus was that that would be ok.
