ive had my best luck with deck and siding stains. you have a longer drying time then you can finish over them with whatever finish you want. you can also use regular wood stain or whatever is your preference

One word, "Search". I posted this a couple of years ago and found it quickly by searching for "finishing cedar".

Look about 2/3 of the way down the first page. I added a link in there to a good pamphlet I found about finishing cedar.

I do cedar and use the hand rub poly. I let that dry then spray polyurethane.
I get a better finish than using a brush.
On my swings I do brush on urethane with UV protection.

I have had great luck with just hand rub tung oil.
Here in Florida cedar is hard to get. In New Mexico we had plenty even if the band saw cut up the firewood. Wonderful wood!

I thought a reply was just a reply. When this computer does what I think, we will all be better off.

I agree cedar is such beautiful wood. It should be a crime to use any synthetic on it! Of all the research I've done on this subject the advice that I followed was the one that promoted using Olympic brand and stressed that it was "finished for pesentation only" because the natural oils in cedar would over power anything you put on it.

I have also shied aways from using any poly over-sprays. I just use a good quality clear cedar siding sealer and then paint the highlights with latex paint. I figured if that combination hold up on a house for 20 years it will last on my little signs for at least that long.
